How much can be taken off a flywheel before it becomes non useable? I had a kid really screw up a new flywheel that just needed to be cleaned up and he took .040 off because he thought it needed to be flat across so he took the step out of it. I had him put about .022 step back in it and i put it in the truck and it works but he really took off alot.

Howdy! If it's in and it works, then it should be OK. Over time, you will wear a lot more than 0.040 off of both sides of the friction disc. That's normal. It MAY show signs of getting soft prematurely, but I doubt it. You may not be able to mill it down very many more times. Tell you Machinist that he owes you another flywheel so you have a spare, but have someone else turn it down for you next time. John

.040” is nothing to worry about, nor would .100”.

I have seen cracks in the wear surface of the flywheel that were deeper than .040”.
