Could anybody give me some guidance on what would a fully restored 2F Engine and matching Trans be worth from a 76 FJ40 here in Australia?
Really depends on what fully restored means. Worth and cost are also two very different things.
I just finished my engine rebuild. I did all the tear down, sourced all the parts and am doing a fair amount of the re-assembly. The machine work to do the whole thing (clean/magnafux/bore, fully rebuilt and machined head, grind crank, balance, etc.) was about $3,500 then I’d estimate all the new internals were about $4,000+. All parts are OEM except the cam and main bearings and Toyota thinks highly of some of their parts, particularly the pistons, lifters… So at face value, $8k. If I were to value my time and labor then I’d say it’s a much more expensive engine.
Is it ‘worth’ that? Probably not.
Transmission and transfer case were about $700~ish in parts. Terrain tamer kits and it’s easy.
It’s not really worth the cost IMO unless you really care about keeping it original. A V8 swap makes a lot more financial sense but I’m not a fan of V8’s in FJ40’s but that’s just like my opinion man.
You can probably buy a working 2F that still has hundreds of thousands of miles left on it for a couple thousand dollars. But a used engine is a gamble for the buyer.
What’s wrong with your current engine/transmission? Or are you selling it?
