I did not have a chance to post this but right before I read the warnings I had a conversation with Greg . one of the things that stood out in to me was how at ease I was with talking with him then I read the warning post and people echoed the same thing. One of the things that he stressed was that they do not like doing a full on restoration job that they are just focusing on buying and selling the best fj40 in the market. How do you go about buying something from out of state and not get burned? This really scares the hell out of me. Right now there are two fj40 that I need to go see but one is about a hour and a half away and the other is about three.time is my enemy right now I just don't have a day or a half a day to blow .I hope by next week things will calm down with work and I can go check them out.

Tell me about time...I had to take a week of to get mine...But It was the right one I am sure...Liked it first time I seen it....

Caveat Emptor...

have a local cruiser-head a t local land cruiser club look at whatever you're thinking about buying ... took me over a year, but I ended buying mine out of province, checked out ... there's always something after all the newest sold in NA is over 30yrs old ... personally I like seeing something solid, with warts maybe, then I know what I'm getting ... good luck ... your green 40 is sweet ...

This.

The 2F was designed to be a long-lasting high-torque motor that was easy to maintain and service, sacrificing hp, fuel economy, and weight to obtain these goals. Hence, it is made of cast iron, has relatively low compression, simple (but inefficient) intake and exhaust, pushrod-operated valves, timing gears (no belt or chain), runs at low rpm's, etc. What 1911 said.............

I too spoke to Greg Mushro when I was looking for my cruiser. As I found a cruiser our of Texas, he actually bought it out from under me and the guy I was talking to in Texas was oblivious to who he was and what his intentions were for buying the cruiser was. I too was oblivious to Mushro until reading ALL about him here. I still get e-mails to this day from Greg... I laugh and look at his inventory to see what he has, but that's about it...

Needless to say, I located my another cruiser (40) out of Texas again through a Mud member here (FJ40 Sales Section), and was fortunate enough to find a mechanic there who was a cruiser head and also known here on Mud to look the vehicle over. The owner was more than cooperative, taking as many photo's as I asked for and even more of areas he felt I would want to "SEE.".

Under the vehicle, almost every inch you could see... All the rust prone areas; under the floor mats, back corners, floor boards etc. I then asked the PO to take the vehicle to a shop near where he lived, which he was familiar with and I would pay for a vehicle inspection. The shop charged me ($100) for the inspection. The mechanic went over the vehicle himself, and did engine compression(s), taking photos of ALL spark plugs as he pulled them and showed them in order of removal all together so I could see them as well. He then took more pictures of the undercarriage for me when he removed the skid plates etc. He took pictures of ALL the fluids for me as well as the compression gauge numbers as he was doing them. He wrote the vehicle up with what he found, things it needed etc. An oil change was done, and a NEW battery was even installed at the PO's expense... :) I was sent everything via e-mail(s) several actually to receive all the pictures. They were ALL quality pictures too... Not fuzzy phone pictures or blurry pictures in general. I could see every inch of this vehicle!!!

The vehicle was mechanically sound and had no (obvious) accidents... Frame was straight, panels were metal etc. The process took a while to find the right one, but the stars clearly aligned for me on this deal, and the PO was incredibly accommodating with ALL my requests, so I bought my First cruiser from Texas, "Sight Unseen" except for pictures. It turns out, this was an original Arizona Cruiser and was 416 Dune Beige. The vehicle was sold to a second owner who was in Texas who painted it "Freedom Red." My PO then had it painted back to Dune Beige... Looking the paint job over, it is "decent" but this is clearly where my vehicle lacks...

It was incredibly stressful not to physically seeing the vehicle I was purchasing. But this process went so smooth, I still thought I was being taken for my money... That was right up until the vehicle arrived at my door step on a transport! WOW was I surprised... and SMILE ear to ear every time I drive it, walk past it or see the darn thing... I am a happy 40 owner and this vehicle will be mine while I am here on this earth... lol :)

Sorry this was so long, but this was my long distance purchase experience.... Hope this helps?? The process can go smooth... If it doesn't and you do not feel right, DO NOT BUY THE VEHICLE!!! This site is an INCREDIBLE resource and I am so glad to be a member of this community now as a 40 owner...
