Hello Everyone- First off, pardon the lack of pics. Cruiser not officially for sale yet, but friends gave me 1st right of refusal on their son's '99 100 Series. They are the 2nd owners and have had the car since 2002. Current location is Charleston, SC.
Here's the lowdown:
297,000 miles: Timing belt/serpentine belt, water pump changed at 220,000. Engine seems to run very well. AC Blows cold. Minor clunk when shifting into gear at standstill, but does not seem too far out of the ordinary. Shifts perfectly on the go. Drives and brakes well. No whining from PS pump. $2000 in recent repairs (I believe new front bearings / boots / possible shafts) at very well known, reputable, shop in Charleston, SC. Essentially the car has a ton of maintenance history and has been decently maintained... ...mechanically. No rust on body or major components.
The bad:
Does need shocks and springs.
The tires are just standard, Cooper, street tires.
Low range engages and operates as intended. The diff lock also engages and operates, but makes a mid-pitch whining sound. Not grinding, but not normal.
For lack of a better way of putting it, although no rust (undercarriage clean too), the body is fcuked. Clean carfax and no big accidents, but every body panel has come into contact with something at low speed at one time or another. Damn high-schoolers... (The color is/was a beautiful charcoal grey with a dark green hue.) It looks pretty good from afar, but up close all the dents/dings are apparent.
There's an exhaust leak. It seems to be a foot or two below the manifold, but likely needs attention.
They never cleared the sunroof drains, so the carpet is also questionable. I think it could be cleaned. The rest of the interior is decent though, with reupholstered lower front seat covers. (In beige vinyl, which almost matches.)
This would be my 7th cruiser and 2nd 100 Series, so I'd consider myself mildly knowledgeable. I think I'm going to pass, since I'd likely spend more money fixing her up than she could ever be worth (due to the mileage) to me.
If not concerned about the mileage or body condition, with the lack of rust, this could be a good hunting/wheeling platform. Just not my lifestyle, so the project isn't for me. Please LMK if interested and I'll pass on the owners info via PM. Very lovely family. The son apparently just can't maneuver in tight spaces
I can likely get some pics uploaded, but don't want to waste the time if this isn't a great price for mud members. Just figured I'd help out the owners. Cheers- Chip
