295s vs. 285s …. Would I be happy downsizing? (1 Viewer)

Know anyone that has tried the 35x11.5r16 recon grappler? That sounds super interesting

That looks like a great option for 16's.

No but I want’em!! ... This week haha
Honestly I change my mind daily.

I’ve ran SCS F5 with 295/75r16 (33x12)

18” steelies with 35 x11.50

CurrentIy run 17s with 35x 12.50

I think cruisers prefer the 11.50 width - this really does seem like an ideal size minus the need / want to run wheel spacers again (although I have no worries - It’s ideal to have 1 less thing to worry about)

@GTV runs a 35x11.50 r 17 that has me leaning that direction (See I’m all over the place 🤪)

From a functionality standpoint I am very happy with my Toyo's. Super easy to fit (with the right offset), fantastic ride quality, they just work really, really well. From a width standpoint I wish they were 12.50's 😂

I run the 285/75/16's in my rig, no compaints.

though I am searching for the narrowest tire within a 0.5 inch diameter of those 285's as a second spare. I like running 2 spares overisting for peace of mind since I tend to be way out there. I'm sure unecessary considering the much improved tire biulds over the last 10yrs, but considering my wife runs with me....

good referal but....looks to be mudterrain world with $ to match.

being a second spair, looking for a more inexpensive option......used street tire or?

Plan is to have the second spare reside under the hundy for daily driving, put 1st more robust spare (same as i'm running on 4 corners) on only during my offroad camping juants.

Maybe find a used tire locally since it’s a 2nd back up? Otherwise you’re SOL. 16” tire options are thin these days and not getting any better. If you want more tire choices than you can shake a stick at, get 17’s.

Couple of things. I had 295/75/16 on my 100 when I bought it. They looked good and I thought they were a great size. I ran them for a few months and decided to go down to 285/75/16. The difference looks wise was not drastic, but the 100 drove better. The steering was lighter and the transmission didn’t have to hunt for gears as much. I’ve been on 285s since and recently put on a new set of Cooper discoverer AT3 xlt. These are better than the BFG KO2 that they replaced. Much nicer on the highway and even lighter steering feel.

That said, I’m currently running 295/75/16 KO2’s on my 80. I think they are a good compromise between the 285 and 315 options. I’m not winning any races with the 80 but it does okay.

I was unaware of the nitto 34x11.50 size. I’m pretty interested for the 80 as there are very few tire options for 16” wheels these days.

That’s funny. I got them for the same reason! Buddy in the club runs them on his 80 and can’t shut up about them!

a few "young guns" in the club (mainly lexus and forerunner users) who tend to seek ocut more challenging terrain (can't get much more challenging than the rubicon) don't like them for the weaker sidewalls.

On a slightly similar move I did recently, I stepped down from a 275/70R18 to 285/65/R18, and boy it felt really lighter when it accelerates. And noticeably drinks less fuel. Half an inch shorter is significant. I like how slightly wider the 285/65s looks but it stands a little lower. I now miss how “lifted” it looks on 275/70s. With the front high clearance front bumper my cruiser has, I think 295/70s is the sweet spot (11.6” wide x 34” tall) is the best compromise to the tallness of a 35” tire spec. If I didn’t have the high clearance front bumper (stock look), 285/65 is PURFECT. With the front aftermarket bumper, 295/70 is match made in heaven.

Doesn’t matter the size - Your truck would look great on roller blade wheels! Post some pics!

I just picked up a set of 295/70r18 Nitto Recons for the upcoming snow by recommendation of @Luke111 If the tires are even 1/2 as good as his headlight retrofits then I’ll be winning

Those tires I believe have received and is still getting a lot of good reviews have from different forum platforms. They said it’s very quiet and as capable as the Wildpeak AT3Ws, I’m positive you will like it. I may consider the Recons as well, or may go MT with the Trail Grapplers when I decide to try the 295/70s

Well thank you sir for your kind words, I only have a garage photo of the cruiser since Monday, no onroad/offroad action yet but will probably go wheeling the weekend after this one and see how it holds up.

I agree those look noticeably wider than the 275 (Im actually surprised how much so). I like’em. If they feel and drive better then keep rockin them!

You’re right with the visual of the high clearance bumper - looks great
