285 or 295 for stock 2001 Land Cruiser

I have a 2001 Land Cruiser with stock 275/70r16. I am looking to get a bigger tire without having to spend a lot on a lift. I currently have Geolanders a/t's and they have done great in the mud I deal with so I am content sticking with all terrains. I have removed the running boards but the fender flares are still on. I hate how much the fender flares make the the tires look narrow and how far they set in but I am worried if I remove them the paint underneath will be different colors (burgundy).

What do you all recommend and please post any pictures? Thanks in advance for your help.

The guy's new and excited about his 100. Give him a break. Can't tell you how many times someone comes here with a new LC and gets a smart arse remark, then they never return. I for one would like to see alot of people contributing and getting excited/involved, not just the same 5 guys who live on here talking about just their projects.

Just trying to build my own opinion on the matter before I drop $1200 on a set of new skids. Especially since half of what I've read says 285 and the other half 295. Thanks for your help Fitzgerald

Since this thread will probably get modded anyways- I don't understand why people refer to tire sizes by their section width when they are talking diameter. Saying you have "285's" does NOT explain their diameter. You can have 285/60/whatever or 285/75/whatever- very different diameters. My pet peeve with the tire discussions. Welcome, Vaughngillis, and I agree. New posts/thoughts about old topics are refreshing. Wading through mountains of confusing/contradicting discussions is not always helpful. Good luck with your cruiser.

We have both been on hear since '06. These post are never going to stop. So, we have a couple of options...

a). point them in the right direction - I.e. the FAQ thread and leave it at that.

b). Ignore the thread all together

or

c). be "That Guy".... which provides nothing to the community and pushes people away that may otherwise grow to be meaningful contributors...

To the OP-

Read the FAQ... It wil cover most of your questions. My personal opinion regarding the 295 vs 285 debate is as follows...

I run the 295/75r/16's with a lift. After running them, and then comparing them to other guys with similar set-ups running 285's. you are going to be hard pressed to find a significant difference between the two to justify the cost difference. Right now I question rather I will switch to a 35" tire or go down to a 285. For me and in IMHO 285's will serve you every bit as well as a 295. You wont really gain much over a 285 to justify the cost. Good luck with your choice and welcome. I hope you stick around.

Since this is the latest tire thread it made me wonder what max tire size can fit in the 100 series spare tire location.

Looks like 295 or 285/75/16 should fit no problem with the stock hitch.

I have GY DT 285/75/16 with same size spare. No problem with the stock hitch, I just have to push the tire towards the front when raising it up.

I went 285/75/16 but if I did it again I'd go for a 295/75/16 if the cost wasn't significantly different. The 100 needs every bit of clearance it can get especially when you air down and I've wished for bigger tires many times. I think stock 295s will clear easily as I have plenty with 285s stock even off road.

I went with 285/75r16 because from I read here, it was the largest size that would fit in the stock spare tire carrier. And since it would probably be a while until i had the funds for a rear bumper with a tire carrier, it fit my needs perfectly. The difference between the two sizes is minimal, about less than an inch.
