Hey y’all I’m looking to get a set of 285/70R17 AT tires to put on my gx470 with stock suspension. Read in some other forums that these are the largest sized tires I can get without rubbing with my stock suspension. Can anyone confirm?

Also in regards to the spare tire, will that size tire still fit in the spare tire well under the car?

Thanks in advanced!

If you do some searching you will find that very likely you will be doing a good bit of plastic trimming/reshaping to get the tires to fit and it might still be tough.

Also the tire likely won’t fit in the stock location underneath unless aired down.

If you do more searching you will find better answers though just FWIW

265/70r17 usually rub a tiny bit, no way are 285/70r17 not rubbing. I think that’s more in the range of running board removal and some trim and heat gun work.

This is the post I saw in a different forum about the 285/70r17.

I currently have 265/70R17 and they don’t rub at all .

I run 255 80 17 on stock +25mm offset wheels with stock suspension with no rub. Did move the front fender liner, no running boards and the PO already have the LCA caster set at max.

Big difference going from 265/70 to 285/70. The guy in the clublexus had “well worn” tires. Still surprised he didn’t rub.

I have 285/70/17 KO2’s. 2” lift. Had to do the body mount chop and move the liner up front. Still rubs a tiny bit.

265/70R17's don't rub at all with stock wheels on stock suspension, and look pretty "stuffed" in the front too. With zero offset wheels they rubbed on my GX quite a bit and I had to heat gun the fender liner and front mud flap. I would not try 285's stock.

After lifting my 265's look at bit small so I'm gonna try the 255/75 or 255/80 route when my 265's wear out and after I regear the GX. 265's are actually a pretty nice tire size for a stock GX as they really don't compromise fuel economy, acceleration, and spare tire fitment like a bigger tire does. The GX will still be capable off road with 265's.

i keep going back and forth on this, and was curious, what are the advantages and cons of 255/75s vs 265/70s? is skinnier and taller better for some applications vs wider and shorter?

Relative to a 265/70, the main gain would be additional height and ground clearance. I personally don't want to go all the way to a 285 as they are pretty heavy and wide, and therefore reduce MPG, acceleration, braking, etc. 255's seem to be a good way to get extra height and clearance without harming on-road driveability, but I have yet to run them myself. My 265's have 30-40k left in them so it will be awhile until I upgrade.

255/75r17 usually have a lot of BFG MT takeoffs from Jeep’s for cheap. I went 255/80r17 and while I had to trim a good bit, and eventually did a front bumper, no body mount chop required. Skinny makes for easier fitment

Comes down to trail/road conditions really. Probably won't notice any/much difference between those too sizes

But yes you could argue skinnier is better in some situations, but wider/floatier is better in others 🤷🏼‍♂️

255-75/17 BFG KO2’s
Approx 2.5” lift (Ironman FCP’s), on stock 4-runner rims.
These tires rubbed slightly with stock suspension, but no rubbing with the lift.
”C” rated, good ride, balanced (fairly) easily, pretty light for the class.
Hard to go wrong with the KO2.
EDIT…they do not fit in the spare-tire location. I carry my spare either on the trailer you see (same tire and wheel combo on it), or on a RIG’D hitch-mounted carrier.

im not going into rocks, almost all of my offroad is sand dunes or muddy two tracks with some mild holes. wider would make sense here right?

Yeah I would say so

Does your hitch mounted tire carrier allow for the barn door to full open and lock?

Yes it does.
The only real gripe I have is that the tire “stands off” further than I’d prefer from the rear door. I’d like it more high and tight.
Otherwise, it’s very solid and useful

That makes sense. The only solution to that is going with the style of tire carrier that bolts into the door, like JW offroad one, etc. I'm thinking about doing that long term, but for now I'm just going to store the spare inside the car.
