I am performing a tune-up on my 60 this week, but wanted to ask this question anyway.

Is 2800 RPMs at 65 MPH pretty normal for a FJ60 (stock 2F)? I am running 31 in. tires.

That's about what I get--maybe a little higher on the rpms at 65, closer to 3,000? I usually keep it at 60, so I might be wrong, don't have it memorized, but that sounds about right.

Anyway, if you or the p.o didn't regear the speedo cable gears, it doesn't matter what size tires you have, it always will register 65 mph at 2800 rpm--the speedo counts revolutions of the driveshaft, which isn't affected by tire size. You could put 37s on there and it would still read 65 at 2800 rpm! :D

I once had a theory that Toyota picked the FJ number to match it's cruising speed--FJ40 cruises best at 40, FJ60 at 60, FJ80 at 80, and so on. :D Gotta feel for thos FJ25 owners. :D :D

Thanks, J-man! I am actually closer to 3000... maybe 2900.

Hey, I did say I am new to all this. This site makes me paranoid.

I'm new to this forum, been here a couple weeks. It seems like the prevailing theme is HZJ60 guy bragging about his cruiser and the pile of parts he's gonna put on. hahaha, actually this forum is great, definitely a gold mine for information. I think I'm just a little jealous of the almighty hzj60. I wish I had an extra $20k to put into my 60. hope you don't take offense hzj60 guy, if I ever see a diesel with 37 in beadlocks driving around Kirkland I'll give you a honk.
