Jim, thanks for the advice on the WC hose adapters. :)

BTW, since you obviously have replaced your hoses, did you do that as the result of the previous problems you were having with your brakes?

This is the power bleeder made by Motive that sells for @ $45-50 that says you fill the power bleeder with two quarts of brake fluid (which supposedly eliminates the necessity of constantly refilling the the MC reservoir).

Well that thing will certainly take all the fun out of it. ;)

I run 45 year old hoses on the driver. The new hoses are sported by the frame I push in and out of the garage. :D
 
Thats the one I have. Works like a charm. KLF will tell you that you can build a better one for $20 though if you're really into the DIY thing. He claims his is better because his has a pressure release on it. On Motive's, you have to crack the screw on top to let out the pressure.

The secrect is to keep track of the miles your pushing it. That way when you sell it you can honestly say you got good mileage and the miles are real low. :rolleyes: I think some of these guys don't know what there are missing by not having one of these good gas mileage, low mile vehicles. :rolleyes:

The secret to good gas mileage is avoiding a lot of stop-and-go driving. Since I can't stop, my mileage has been great!! :D

I ordered my three new brake hoses from the local Toyota dealership and they should be here Tuesday or Wednesday. They charged me $19.58 each based on the part number being the exact same as a "clutch hose" for mid to late 60's FJ40. (If I had ordered the very same part # and called it a "brake hose," it would've been $28. Go figure. :rolleyes: )
 
Knew the hose had to be from something else, didn't figure they'd be stocking 25 parts.

As much as my 25 has been laughing at me for the past six months, the least I can do is laugh back at it. Plus I've been getting a pretty good buzz off of brake fluid fumes.
 
And it does it again . . . .

Only the rear wheels were locked up from the last time. So I jacked it up, cracked the bleeders, and nothing released. Which kinda takes some of the suspicion off of the hydraulics (MC, hoses, WCs, etc.). But, I'm still going to replace the hoses nevertheless.

However, loosened the upper adjusters just a very tiny bit, and they freed right up. Even though the adjusters were previously set with virtually no drag on the drums after the last adjustment and prior to the last test drive.

Leads me to believe that the adjusters are trying be self-adjusters for some reason. :rolleyes:

Anyway, took it for another test drive. Brakes worked fine. And, everything was still spinning free after I parked it. But, that's one of many rituals it goes through before sitting there a day or two and locking up again on its own. :confused:

(Yes, it's parked in a locked garage. My first suspicion was that LivingInThePast was sneaking in and tightening my shoes when I'm not home . . . . just so I'll give my 25 to him. Nice try, John.)
 
I haven't looked at the brakes yet, but are the adjusters side specific ( Ford's are) and you'rs are on the wrong sides? And are they supposed to self adjust? ( Fords do) . and yes, I know its NOT A FORD :grinpimp:

Yep . . . side specific (mirror image). Rotating cam with a gradually increasing radius. And I don't think they're supposed to be doing anything on their own. :confused:
 
Dug this out of my pile, a PO's way to modernize, FJ 40 brakes adapted to 25 rear axle with a 90 deg twist, thought I'd share this with Steve before he shot himself...it could be worse...somehow

Awww, they're not THAT bad...but I'm having a hard time thinking up anything worse! :D ...except maybe the rear drums on my GMC dually van. Pull the rear full float axle shafts, remove the wheel bearing nuts then remove the 80 pound drum with hub and bearings as one piece. :rolleyes:

The one I have with with 40 brakes has the brake cylinders top and bottom so I guess it was a 25 axle converted and not a early 40 axle. My early 40 axle has the wheel cylinders side by side. The wheel cylinders on the 25 have spring clips over the ends of the rubber boots. Has anyone seen this before?

PS the early 40 brakes aren't that bad. If you get them adjusted right and then only drive it a mile or so a month theyr'e fine.:rolleyes: Really I haven't had any problems with the 40's brakes once I get them adjusted. The way I do it is adjust them in all the way in on both sides then adjust out both the same amount till they are close to adjusted. Then adjust each side. Just be sure and spin the wheel and apply the brakes alot while adjusting.

I just have bad memories of FJ40 brakes. CT used to have a brake dyno to pass safety inspection. Even well adjusted it was pretty rare that you could get them within spec (% side/side and front/back). Usually took at least two attempts. Used to be real fun, the machine was set up inside an indoor garage built into the motor vehicle department. You got to drive the vehicle. Had to get it up to like 15 mph inside the garage hit the dyno and then slam on the brakes. Even in high school I thought to myself:

WTF? Is this inspector nuts? This is a Land Cruiser. Sure it'll stop, but I might take a right turn into the lobby. :eek:
 
Here in AZ if you pay for the registration you can put anything on the road if your outside of emissions area.:eek:
