I have a 87 pickup with the 22re carb engine and IFS. I need to pull the oil pan and it looks like I should be able to pull the bolts out of the motor mounts and hoist it up enough to get the pan off. Anyone know If there is actually enough room or will I have to pull the motor?

I kinda doubt youll be able to...the oil pick-up usually deturs this way of oil pan removal....

Im not postive though...I know on my 90 runner runner I can take the pan out with no problem from underneath...the IFS is about 3" lower tho

If you drop the IFS diff it's easy to drop the pan, however you can get the pan off by just removing the 2 rear diff mount bolts, and pivoting the diff down and back on the front bolt (you may need to remove the front driveshaft from the diff...) You do have to drop the pan and then remove the oil pickup while it's still in the pan... Not ideal, but I have done it...

If you jack up the engine you will probably have to do the same oil pick up trick to get the pan out, and may have to lower the diff still anyway... Best of luck!

Thanks... I guess we will see what happens next weekend.

The best way to do it is just bite the bullet and remove the front diff. In order to reinstall it correctly, you will have to clean out the old RTV material and reapply new stuff...leaving the diff in place makes this pretty difficult. Good luck!!

I have a 3" bodylift in my 1987 truck. I was able to unbolt the motor mounts and jack up the engine, then remove the oil pan. If you do not have a bodylift in your truck I do not think you will have enough room. I think I had to remove the fan shroud (radiator) and pull the hoses. Hope that helps.

Thanks guys. Im gonna start on it on friday. I built the motor in it for a friend when he owned it. The initial break in oil was never changed... so he washed the bearings. I bought the truck from him and am redoing the borttom end.

This sounds to me like a project that you're gonna get half-way thru and you'll be saying "I shoulda just pulled the engine out in the first place". It's really not hard to yank, and it's soooo much easier to work on when it's on a stand.

I have had replaced a head on one and done a full rebuild before just wasnt sure if I wanted to leave the motor in. Once I started assessing it I figured it would be easier to pull the motor. It took about 2 hours start to having in on the stand. Ended up im guessing the mechanical fuel pump had gone bad. It had like 2 gallons of fuel in the crankcase plus the oil. It ended up spinning a bearing. Dropping the Crank off in the A.M. at the machine shop. Be glad to had her put back togehter!
