Hi all,

I'm looking at an '06 GX470 with about 220k miles for $8.5k. Hoping to get them down closer to $7.5.

This model does have KDSS. Anything I should really worry about when buying one with this high mileage? The maintenance records are incredible, all Lexus maintained and one owner.

Should I stay away from the KDSS with this high mileage? Can the KDSS be taken out if theres ever an expensive issue to fix?

If maintenance records are impeccable, I would just pull the trigger on it. Dealer maintained vehicles can last a long time.

The big item tickets are air bags, timing belt, water pump, radiator, alternator, and transmission flush. Maybe the components in KDSS. After that, it's all regular maintenance with the fluids.

I think taking out KDSS might be expensive and time consuming. So, just make sure it was well maintained.

Assuming all of the big ticket items are covered under the previous maintenance, which they are, is there really any huge risk in buying one of these with 220k miles? Are most known to go past 300k? I previously wanted one around 150-170 in order to keep for awhile before I hit the 300k mark. However, if they are known to go into the 300's this sounds like a good option for me.

This particular engine, the 4.7L V8, is supposed to be one of the best engines Toyota has made. It's on the 100 series LC and Tundra. There was an article floated around here on some thread that the same engine on a Tundra lasted over 1M miles before Toyota bought it. Toyota disassembled the whole Tundra to see how the seats, engine, etc. were able to surpass their expected life expectancy.

Anyways, it's a great engine with awesome pedigree. I just can't predict how long yours will last.

I have about that on mine with mileage correction for the tires. I am at 196k and ran 33,34, and 35s for over 100k now. Maintenance is king in this truck. If you keep up with fluids, TB, WP, cooling, etc they will run a VERY long time. There are a few on here and GXOR that are pushing passed 400k+. A frequently overlooked component are coilpacks. Everyone does plugs but not the packs. They make a HUGE difference.

Hey @DanKunz, could you elaborate on the what changing out the coilpacks help with? My 06' is just over 180k miles, and I've been very good with maintenance its whole life, but have not thought about coilpacks. Mine is running amazing and I plan to have it for many more miles, these are great trucks.

spark plugs work through the coil packs. It is like replacing the rotor, distributor cap, and wires in older engines.

ftfy ;)

I have 196k on mine...I should probably do coil packs one of these days.

Darn. The list of preventive maintenance keeps growing!!! Arghhh. And here I thought I was done with preventive maintenance.

Just replace stuff every 3 months no matter what lol. After 8 years my list is shorter

Im looking for some more opinions on this topic. I am also looking to buy a higher mileage rig and want to know what im getting into

You may not need the coil packs if your engine is running smoothly. If it's shuddering or misfiring that's one thing to check.

So Dan et al, to what extent do you follow the manufacturer's recommendations on when to do preventive maintenance? Knowing a timing belt failure is really bad that's a biggy, but on plugs, fluids, etc, what schedule do you all follow?

I somewhat follow the owner's manual:
  • Every 5k replace engine oil/filter...I'm still on dino oil
  • Every 30k replace front/rear differential oil, transfer case, brake fluid
  • Every 100k replace coolant, transmission fluid, timing belt, water pump, drive belt
  • Every 120k replace spark plugs
  • Every 150k be ready to replace radiator, alternator

Pretty much my static list and interval unless I break something and "happen to be there" and have a chance to upgrade or replace something that saves labor. Example : I did my starter and did a third tb/WP after 60k just because it was apart.

Im wondering more on how well the KDSS system holds up. Would you be better off with a high mileage rig without it or are they still strong with regular care

I like it on mine, however I removed the rear because it limited my lift. waiting for someone to develop spacers.
