EDIT to my EDIT:

We do NOT have a permit for 2024. Sorry folks.

I am really bummed.

EDIT:

The permit for the week of June 17th - 23rd has been turned back in to the Forest Service and they have found another group to use the permit.

June 17th - 23rd is no longer a Casner run for CSC. I will start a new thread for the week of September 2nd - 8th.

I called in this morning and was able to get a permit for Casner for the first half of the permit process.

At this moment, we have the week of June 17 - 23. Certainly not ideal as the weather will most likely be hot, but beggars cannot be choosers, right?

The call-in process for permits after July 22nd will be on June 6th. Hopefully we can get a better week.

Nice work! The weather will be great for camping. Always nice when the trail climbs to cooler weather. I'm in for sure if we do it on the Saturday with a Friday to Sunday camp. Otherwise I'll have to confirm a bit closer to the the actual dates.

Some health issues in the family and forgot about the March 7th date. Hopefully D day will stick better in my old brain.

Just hope it's only fire restrictions have to deal with. If there is month that the forest would be completely closed June is it. The rim hasn't seen that much snow this winter.

We are about a month from the June run. Was one of my grandkids highschool graduation today. Mentioned this to my daughter and her husband. They are wanting to attend. They have a fifth generation 4Runner TRD Off Road. They are interested in camping as well.

Brice has contacted me and asked if I would lead this run since he is going to be out of town.

This run has the same rules as past years. Minimum of three vehicles and a maximum of ten. I have no idea of the condition of the trail. I went on the run two years ago and trail was in good condition. Not sure if I would be camping. Unless the Monsoon starts early I expect campfire restrictions being in place by the end of June. I live at 7,000' during the summer. Next week's forecast is temperatures in the 90s. Hoping we can get a second run date late September or early October.

Who was planning on going on this run?

Also June 6th is day to try get a second date for those available to call in.

@brices123 or anyone else comfirm this is the correct phone number and time.to.call the forest service Thursday? Also how many vehicles are saying will be on the run? If I get thru will ask for the latest date when it's cooler.

If anyone is interested in trying to get a permit for Casner for the first half of the season, here is the procedure.
  • Thursday, March 3rd at 8:30 AM is the starting point for reserving weeks 1-11, May 9th-July 24th.
CALL Michale Gordon with the Forest Service at 928-203-2912.
WHAT TO DO: Only telephone calls will be accepted to reserve your permit.
When you call, tell us 1) your preferred week(s), and 2) the number of vehicles.

STANDARD REGULATIONS

1. No permits are required for vehicles less than 62” wide.
2. For vehicles more than 62” wide, the permit season for 2022 is May 9th-October 9th.
3. No camping or campfires allowed between the gates for all public and permit holders.
4. The free Permit is valid for one day during the week-long reservation. Permit reservations are from Monday-Sunday.
5. No less than three vehicles and no more than ten. Group size cannot exceed 25 people.
6. Permits will be mailed; when received, please sign it, and have it on your person while traveling on the Casner Mountain Trail.

John,

That is the correct number to call. I will be trying to get through as well.

@Living in the Past - There is a minimum of 3 vehicles needed to do this run. If not enough CSC people are able to do it, we can reach out to Michael at the Forest Service and see if he knows on anyone that would want to join. If no one from CSC ends up going, we can give the permit back to the forest service, but we should give them some time to find another group that would want to go.

i planned to go this year but will be out of town...

I agree with you Brice. My daughter has asked me about this last weekend. I told her I couldn't guarantee the run would happen and not to plan on it.

With the lack of anyone saying they want to go probably best to turn it back in sooner than later.
Is this an actual mailed/download permit?

If I do get thru tomorrow on the phone how many vehicles should I saying will be on the run. Assume they will ask? When the run first started years ago they was a waiting list. Things has changed.

I sent the Forest Service an email saying we were unable to use the permit.
Hopefully one of will get through this morning.

I did call and got thru first. I was unaware of how the process worked. Your given a number to texted your information. You then you get a called back later. When I got call was told I have the first week available which is July. It was not first thru get to pick the week which was disappointing. I passed and now first on the list if their is a cancellation for a better date. July is not much better than late June. Hopefully @brices123 will post up.

I also got through and got a better week.
I was able to secure the week of September 2nd - 8th. The 2nd is Labor Day, and camping will probably be very busy. My thought is to do the run on the 7th and camp the nights of the 6th & 7th.
I will post up more details as we get closer.

@brices123 I was told the first call gets the first date. Second caller gets the second date and so on. Was told this has been the process for the last ten years he has been doing it. Has been this way since our club started doing the run in 2015? Is so I would call early for the first half of the second and guess when to call for the second half. I guess I just assumed this was like tickets to buy. Earliest gets to choose. For a few weeks didn't seem to be that complicated. Especially since the dates were given on a call back. Calendar with the date and once the first caller picks their date mark the calendar. Next caller picks any date except the one already filled. As it goes by their fewer dates left and.easier to do. This isn't rocket science.

If my affairs are in order new tires, fuel tank replaced I would be down for September and that week is my birthday.

As of Friday Coconino National Forest moves to stage 2 restrictions. It also closes many of the forest service roads around the flagstaff area. Probably wouldn't have made a difference for a run this weekend. If we have a good monsoon hopefully restrictions will be gone my September.

The county is following the Forest Service and going to stage too as well. In you live in Coconino County you be in stage 2 as of Friday.

UPDATE:
Well, I guess the Forest Service did not issue us the permit for the week of September 2nd. I just had a phone call with the ranger and he told me that even though I got through and was told that week, we did not get the permit. Mixups happen.

I will update the #1 post.

Sorry folks.

Well that sucks. Maybe should haven't taken the first week in second half of the season. Really didn't want to be anywhere near Sedona in July. I still supposedly first on the list if someone gives up their week but I don't have a warm fuzzy feeling about that happening even someone does turn in their permit. Not offering first choice of weeks to first caller on such a few weeks available because it's too hard to keep track of left me shaking my head.

Guess I need to double down on making Northern Arizona July meeting on July 20th. Sounds like everything will be at a cool 7,000'.

I was camping at the spot were we did the 2023 Casner run and the USFS is closing that area and building a wood fence blocking access. The person from the USFS said that the roads coming off of forest road 231 to the rim are not authorized roads and were there because people were making their own roads. I showed the person on the Gaia GPS app with the USFS 2016 map overlay, that the USFS did have it marked as a road, but they are still closing it. We may need to find a new spot to camp next Casner trip. It is too bad because it was a nice spot.
