2022 GX460 Hitch Question (1 Viewer)

I'm interested to know the reasoning actually - my '22 had the tow hitch installed from the port. Built August '21, took delivery 9/3/21. I guess this is slightly before the stop sale and instruction to not install at the port.

So that part number is the same one that is on my wife’s 2015 GX460, so I think the dealer gave you a BS answer unless they have had problems with the production of the hitch.

Toyota/Lexus cares doesn’t care, they just try to make you feel better. I dealt with them for over a year on a problem my 2020 Tacoma had since new and all they could offer was that the dealer said they need to see the vehicle, 8 times for the same problem and it still doesn’t work. I am lucky it is just a minor problem I can deal with. Since the state of Colorado laws let me, I recorded every conversation, but I decided not to push this.

Sorry to resurrect a dead post, but I have a 2013 and have been :banghead: looking for an OEM hitch. If you have one, it's solid gold, because you cannot find an OEM hitch anywhere except I guess a junkyard.

I return bleary-eyed from reading the internet over and over, and I have found two competing theories as to why the hitch is no longer available from dealers:

1) Toyota/Lexus put in an order for hitches, but the subcontractor/manufacturer drilled the wrong diameter bolt holes into them, so an entire lot or lots were lost and had to be taken back. Under this theory/rumor, hitches will be back in stock by the end of May 2022.

2) the more insidious rumor is that Toyota/Lexus overstated the GX's towing capacity, saying it's 6,500 lbs. when it's really not. Draw-Tite is still selling their hitch for the GX470, their rating is 6,000/600, or 7300/730 with weight distribution, but on the internet for the 460 all I can find is the sh!tty Class 3 that just attaches to the crossmember only and not to the frame, and is only rated at 5,000 lbs. No idea why Curt, Draw-Tite, etc. wouldn't be making a Class 4 for the GX 460 unless there was something going on, but eyeballing it I don't see HUGE differences in the overall geometry and weight distribution of the 470 to the 460. The delay and backlog under this theory is due to Toyota/Lexus trying to engineer a solution to get the 460 to a tow rating of 6,500, or to come up with some sort of mea culpa about selling a vehicle that is not capable of towing what they said it could.

Does anybody have any information that goes beyond rumor or speculation? I want to start towing things, but I just bought my GX in no small part because I believed it was an upgrade to my old vehicle (which maxed out at 5,000). The wait/silence is really messing with me, although the situation would cause me pause if I had an OEM installed...

Yeah, I sold mine a while back. I wish I could update the title of this thread.

And great information too!

Sounds like if you can just wait till the end of May, you may be able to find one.
Do you have a trip coming up or something that you need one right away?
Also, do you ever have any plans of a rear bumper? They almost all come with hitches.

Honestly I don't a trip planned, but this is 'MURICA, I want it NOW  In all seriousness though, I really did get the GX in part because of the increased tow capacity (the other part is this truck is a friggin' tank, but...)

I've considered a rear bumper replacement, but none of the manufacturers are willing to put up a tow rating on the integrated hitches, something about SAE testing procedures blah blah blah, tow at your own risk because we can't test this hitch properly. In my head if the hitch comes off the truck I want to be able to sue the largest vehicle manufacturer in the world, the one with deep pockets, not just Victory 4x4 or Coastal Off Road or whoever.

The only thing I found so far on theory one came from 2022 Tow hitch receiver. - ClubLexus - Lexus Forum Discussion - https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gx-2nd-gen-2010-present/977901-2022-tow-hitch-receiver-2.html

User "Dorrps" on 3/22/22:
"I have finally learned from a dealer shop that they changed the diameter of the bolt holes in the frame but didn't bother to let the hitch manufacturer know. No word as to when the hitch will be available. It is curious that Lexus brags about the great tow capacity but has no way to actually tow something and after market will only give you 5000#. There is no mention of a tow package anywhere in the specs or build sheet. I am waiting to order until they get this fixed. I can't trade away my current tv until it can be replaced or I will be grounded for the summer. I must admit that I am very disappointed in Lexus. I thought they were better than this. I posted to Lexus on Twitter and they responded immediately to say they are working on it. We should all post on Twitter. Maybe public shaming will help them move along."

ClubLexus is FULL of people saying they ordered GXs brand new with the hitch, but on delivery the GX was delivered without one, and dealers are either unable or unwilling to say why it was deleted and when it would be back in stock to install. There's theories everywhere, supply chain, redesign, recall, stop sale, but nothing solid from what I would consider a reputable source.

One last option would be to have one fabricated and bolted/welded to your frame. Those types of projects usually come out over engineered and could probably tow the Queen Mary when done.

I wouldn't believe anything that anyone "hears" from anyone that isn't Lexus corporate as to why the hitch isn't currently available.

I've been trying for 7 months now to get a hitch for my '22 GX after it was removed by Lexus from the build (ie wasn't installed) at the port.

I've been unable to get a real answer from Lexus in at least 4 attempts so I went with a Curt hitch for now. I'm still pissed off though about it as part of my going with the GX was the Class IV hitch that the GX offered.

ETA: It's been about 6 weeks since I last called so I'll try calling Lexus again. If I'm lucky I'll get a response in 3-4 days saying they have no details on the actual problem or when they'll be available., however, most likely I won't get a response at all which has happened several times over the last 7 months.

ETA 2: I shouldn't have called as I get all worked up talking to them as they don't seem to think it's a problem but I keep it civil. She asked for the VIN and took my information after which she hung up on me without saying another word

Hey man, your were in one of the million threads I've been reading! I think your parents were moving or something and you got the Curt as a stop gap...?

I've also looked over the Twitter feed, some guy in the middle east was also asking about PT228-60140, Lexus' response was basically "ask your dealer."
I'm a little surprised nobody has done anything legally about it, although I suspect that supply chain issues in other industries make lawyers hesitant to get into it until all that goes away (since investigation into the actual cause of the missing hitches could prove very costly).

Yeah that was me. The Curt worked fine for the move happily, however, I got the GX in large part because I wanted a Class IV hitch that attached to the frame rather than just the rear crossmember.

I flat out told the person on the phone after she said I'd need to talk to my dealer about the hitch that the dealer knows nothing about it and that after 7 months of not being able to get a hitch they need to stop advertising the GX's towing capabilities since you can't tow when there isn't a hitch available for purchase.

Overall I really like the vehicle, however, I'm VERY disappointed in Lexus as a brand. I've heard forever how great they are but I've not experienced that in my experience with them thus far.

I definitely feel your pain. I have a new-to-me 2013 and a lot of my plans are in a bit of a holding pattern until this gets sorted out. If it's any consolation, it's not just the new GXs that are suffering, PT228-60140 isn't available for anybody.

On the flip side, I have personally seen GXs do some completely insane things. I've seen a GX 470 hop a 4 ft. ditch, go through a country livestock fence, and come to rest against a tree, then back out of said ditch in a hurry. The radiator was cracked and leaking, but it ran 5 miles home no problem. Ran to Autozone, got a new radiator, my buddy swapped the radiator and I buffed out all the scratches. Took it for a test run, ran straight as an arrow down the road, and when his missus got home she had no idea any shenanigans had occurred.

These things are quality built, I'm really, really clinging to that and hoping this is all just that steel is hard to come by to make these damned things, and Lexus corporate is not used to directly talking to consumers.

Not a bad idea, since they allow you to camp (and defecate) literally anywhere you want, and when you're done with your "fix" just toss the needles out on the curb!

That's a bit of a stretch. Maybe in Dallas proper...

I think @r2m was referring to things in California... or maybe in Austin. That definitely doesn't happen in Dallas... and I agree, definitely not in my part of Frisco. Haha.

I was referring to San Francisco... Is there a Frisco in Texas?? If so, I need to delete my post! o_O

Haha. Yeah, we have a Frisco here in NTX. To be precise Toyota is in Plano, which is right by Frisco. I live in Frisco.
