Hello everybody!

A couple of months ago, in the throes of wanderlust and cabin fever that come with having a newborn at home, I realized that we needed a very capable beast for off-roading, roadtripping, and mountain adventures (as well as apocalyptic/natural disaster/zombie scenarios). I have three daughters ages 6, 4, and 10 weeks, and I wanted something to help create memories of a lifetime with my girls as they grow up. After much diligence, I landed on the Lexus LX 570.

Last week I bought a 2020 LX 570 with 36k miles, luxury trim (Levinson sound, HUD, cool box, rear entertainment, etc), dark blue exterior and black interior. The truck has a clean Carfax and appears in excellent condition. The prior owner seemingly kept it on pavement. It has the stock wheels and Dunlop tires. The tools in the rear tailgate, towing connectors, and rear entertainment headsets were in original packaging. I preferred not to have the rear entertainment (trying to get the kids' faces away from screens and towards the outdoors is the goal), but they will be useful on long roadtrips. I still might remove them eventually--I found an option to cover the holes. In any event, I paid about $68k for the truck with CPO (7 years, 100k miles on powertrain), plus TTL and a 5-year Toyota service plan, which I think/hope was a fair deal.

I want to make the truck ready for off-road adventures since we love going to the mountains. I connected with a shop (Tandem Off-Road) that specializes in Toyota and Lexus off-road mods to help me with the build. They've been great. We are planning to put on Method 701 bronze wheels with 275/70r18 Toyo A/T IIIs, as well as CBI Covert front bumper and sliders. I'm placing the order this week. I also picked up at a good price a complete used Harrop TVS2650 supercharger set in good condition, which I'm heavily leaning towards putting on the truck based on the good reports I've seen so far (though still researching potential effects on reliability). Also, planning to add a winch and light bar.

Eventually I may make additional upgrades/modifications, including roof rack, RTT, and/or rear bumper. The roof rack seems essential. It seems like the RTT would be a lot of fun with the kids, but I probably wouldn't want to have it on the truck all the time. Not sure how necessary the rear bumper is but maybe.

Anyway, this is the first time I've done a project like this. I'm really excited about the fun and memories we will have with the LX. I relied on a lot of information I gleaned from this forum while I was planning the project, so I thought I'd create a profile and post a hello and thank you here. I look forward to chatting with you all!

Here is a photo of our new addition.

Update: I brought the truck home from Tandem today with the new wheels, tires, custom tuned Harrop supercharger, and Powerbrake X-line kit.

It’s a monster. Pablo Moreno and his team at Tandem are excellent. This thing pulls effortlessly with great power throughout. Stops on a dime too.

I’m really excited about how this turned out.

Pablo posted a nice mashup about the truck.

Next step for this modified J201 concept build will be adding CBI bumper and sliders…

Please take proper safety measures for your family:

Bumpers: Protect the family from front and rear collisions

Sliders: Protect the family from side collisions

Suspension: Protects the family from crazy drivers, enabling evasive maneuvers to be completed safely

Large tires: Protects family in event of flash flood

Aux tank: Protects family from being stranded

#safetyfirst :p

Thank you for the tips! I’ll have to add the auxiliary tank on the next round. Where does it attach to the vehicle? Any brands folks recommend?

Also, what are everybody’s thoughts on tire size as between 285/70r18 and 275/70r18? Does it make a difference? Which should i choose?

Thanks!

Also, since you seem to know the game, how do I justify the TVS2650 supercharger to the wife? Absolutely necessary for safety… right?

If there’s a drunk or reckless driver, or someone trying to do you harm, you will be able to get to safety faster and get out of their way

My thinking exactly

Officially placed my orders today for the following:

- CBI Covert Bumper
- CBI Sliders
- Method 701 Bead Grip bronze wheels (18 inch)
- Toyo Open Country A/T 275/70R18
- Interior accessories (Rear entertainment leather covers, center console organizer for cool box, seat gap multifunctional storage tray)

I already have the Harrop TVS2650 supercharger set ready to install. It’s a pre owned set in good condition that the Toyota dealer pulled off a tundra. I paid $1k for the whole set.

Also, the dealer is replacing the windshield for me on Friday. I noticed after signed the papers when they cleaned her up that there was a chip in the windshield (hadn’t noticed it before because it was rainy out and the chip blended in with the water droplets on the glass). Dealer was great about it, ordered the new windshield, and is covering the full replacement, which is awesome.

Wheels and tires should arrive in the next few days. Sliders and bumper in 8-12 weeks. Really pumped to see the Beast with her new shoes and blower and windshield, and eventually in her armor.

Being sure to tell the wife this is all absolutely necessary for safety. Can never be too safe.

I haven't been very active on here recently, but I rememeber that CBI had some really bad delivery issues on the 2018+ bumpers. You should check to see if that ever got resolved.
Did you look into the Dissent armor? It's amazing stuff, and mostly aluminum, which is great for our AHC.

Here's my old build tread.

And here's the armor in action!

Hmm I will check on that. Thanks for the heads up. I’m working with a shop that quoted delivery in 8-12 weeks, but that may just be what CBI told them.

I considered the Dissent bumper but liked the look of CBI a little better with the angular lines tracking the shape of the grill. Hopefully it won’t be too long to deliver. That would be a bummer, but I’ll still have a lot of fun with the truck in the meantime.

Question for yall: Should I add an ARB on-board compressor? Seems like it would be very useful. I’m reaching the end of my budget (obviously, see above, 😓) but that one seems worth doing now.

Wow the armor held up pretty damn well. That RX looks like it hit a wall!

I prefer my 24 gallon Aux Tank on my roof rack. Looks best there.

Also as @TeCKis300 would say, any self respecting LX owner, needs full fat 305. I am a poor LC owner, and given I live in LA, there is no full fat anything, so 245s for me, just like God Intended Land Cruisers to have in the middle east.

Yes and you are going to wish you had gone bigger than 275/70 🥴

Will 285/70 spare fit the undercarriage? I don’t want to do a rear mount at this point, due to all the kids stuff I’m juggling to put in the back during regular city use while my kids are in strollers and such. I probably could still make the switch at this point.

Yes and so will a 295/70/18

I realize there are a number of threads on wheels/tires, and I’ve reviewed a lot of them. But I’m still really conflicted about 285/70 vs 275/70. Can anyone explain pros and cons to me like I’m a five year old? Is bigger always better? What are the drawbacks for everyday driving? Is it just about the look? Am I overthinking this and it really doesn’t matter between the two? Any help appreciated as I don’t want to have regrets and want to get the best setup for my use case (city driving, road trips, medium difficulty mountain off-roading).

The first number is your width in millimeters, and the second number is the percentage of the width for height.
So the 285 is a wider tire than the 275, and both have a higher of 70% the width. 199.5MM vs 192.5mm respectively. I don’t know anything about the offset on your method wheels, but on a stock wheel, the 275 is the widest you can run without contacting your upper control arm.

Keep in mind that with IFS, lift doesn’t mean bigger tire size. You need to drop in low mode and check your clearance. As long as you’re not rubbing your UCA, the other fixes are easy plastic stuff.

@TeCKis300 has a really good thread called “fitting full fat 35s” or something like that.

The 275 is a much more common size than 285, so the tires might be cheaper 🤷🏻‍♂️

if 5 year old = 305 done

rest of your post is more akin to a 15 year old who cant make up their mind

Zing! Thanks for that.

Welcome

We are Lc owners , the last real men left on Earth
I am going to stick with the 275/70s due to replaceability. There are so many nails on the road where I live that I will end up having to replace them from time to time, so better availability is key. Thanks Radman for the advice.
