Hello everybody,

I brought this up on a different thread, but am now starting a new thread more specific to the problem at hand because this is getting serious and I need help figuring this out quickly...

My 2017 with 1300 miles keeps stalling after a cold start first thing in the morning. It starts just fine at first.

First time I made it about 3 miles, then started getting all sorts of systems failure alarms, radio died, cameras and warning systems dies, then power steering and braking assist. The engine revved in a throbbing, cyclical manner. Then it died and would not start up again.

This morning, the truck started, then the big freak out happened right away and it didn't make it out of the driveway.

After the first episode, I got towed to the dealer. The tech documented "battery failed performance test: bad battery cell." I got a new battery and took the truck home. I had one day of normal performance after that until this morning.

Only other thing: A couple days prior to all this, I took the truck to install an Ironman suspension system. The shop (not the dealer) had a huge KDSS problem after the install with a 5 inch lean to one side. They could not get it to recalibrate to save their lives. At one point, they had it up on the lift at full droop for a whole day, if not longer. Eventually they had to re-install all the factory parts, get the system to re-calibrate, then once it finally did, they re-installed the Ironman kit and all was fine. They performed an alignment as well. They said they only touched the KDSS shutter valves and disconnected the front ABS lines, but that was it aside from the suspension parts. Nothing else in the electrical system was touched.

Any helpful thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks.

Since it's an essentially brand new 2017, I'd let the dealer sort it out. Admittedly, they seem to have taken an easy out the first time with the "bad battery" explanation; but now they have more info to work with.

Having said that, based on your story about the shop that did the suspension work, I'm not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling that they might not have inadvertently screwed something up with the ECU. Even if they did, the dealer should be able to figure it out. If the dealer is convinced it was the installer that was at fault, with good documentation, you can then pursue some remedy with the installer.

To which Dealer was it towed?

You should Contact Camelback Toyota, especially given the newness of the truck, they are a preeminent Land Cruiser shop, in no small part thanks to Eric Murphy. I would strongly impress upon you to PM/contact Murf (Ih8mud name).

Also, fwiw, CBT Put on my full lift & uca's, tires, aligned etc. So reach out to them w/ full confidence.

Also check out the club page. AZ- Copper State Cruisers

Yes, I have Eric on the case. He was out of town on the first one, but he's there today. Truck will go to CBT.

I also wonder if the suspension work somehow contributed. Thank you.

I can't imagine tinkering with a couple springs and shocks would contribute to a stalling issue. Doesn't seem to correlate too me.

The rear axle harness for the speed sensors has a bit of slack in it but not much. If the shop dropped / lowered the rear axel while installing your suspension (which I'm sure they had to) then the cable can be stressed and or pulled loose. That can account for the dash being lit up like a Christmas tree. Seems like a lot of STUFF is layered off the braking systems and speed sensors are mixed into part of that layer. I speak from experience on that fact. However, my truck did not have stalling issues - is it stalling or limping? Limping means you wont be able to get over 25 mph smoothly. I'm not sure this is helping you but the more info you have the more questions you can ask the service techs to provide findings for. I just recently went through a dead cell battery issue too so I feel your pain. keep smiling at least you can afford the rig!

One more time and it may qualify for a Lemon Law buyback. Something to threaten the dealer with. Toyota probably doesn't want too many land cruisers listed as lemons.

Sounds like youre jumping the gun a little bit. Call me reckless but he might want to find out whats really happening first after the diagnosis from the dealer?

It seems there have been more issues with 16-17 models than earlier 200s. I like the new look and electronic gadgets, but the 8 speed and these hard to diagnose issues worry me a little bit - especially since it's such a low volume vehicle that most dealerships don't have to diagnose or fix all that often.

40HNTR: It was just for his knowledge. Up to him if he wants to do it or not. It's something I thought I'd mention. Obviously he has upgraded the vehicle so he wouldn't want to but it's something I would use to scare the dealership into proper action, especially after dropping $100k on a car. It may not qualify for a lemon since he altered the vehicle.

mcgaskins: I share your view. I haven't had time but I want to review the navi infotainment solution in the 13-15 models before I buy my second J200. At the moment I am leaning towards the 08-11 as I like the vinyl seats and the infotainment system. I do wish for HIDs and 360 parking view would be nice. But not sure how durable the newer seats are over 200k+ miles. My vinyl seats with 140k on them still look new.

I wouldn't go off the deep end yet, though I know it's prob not where you want to be given a new shiney and expensive car.

This is pretty telling that's it's an electrical issue.

May or may not be related to your mods as early component failure for a new vehicle are not unheard of.

I'd get a volt meter on the battery. Both at engine rest, and with engine fired. Seems to me that it would be within the alternator/charging system, or some major component/ground with a flaky connection.

@Willy beamin the truck is limping, not stalling. All the dash lights will flicker on and off, all the dash dials wave back and forth in sync, and the truck will gain very little speed regardless of what I do with gas pedal. Oh, and as I write this, my wife is calling telling me someone just hit her in the Audi. FML. What the F is going on here?!? Gotta go. Thanks, everyone for the input.

Latest from CBT is that they suspect a bad alternator. They are out of 27F batteries, so now we wait until tomorrow to install a new one, plus wait for a new alternator, then continue on with diagnostic testing. Oh, and then they found this.

That would be my brand new SPC UCA with a broken bolt in it. The tech has already broken two tools trying to tap and drill it out.

There just seems to be more problems than I would expect from a cruiser given the changes and the testing that most likely went into the refresh. 8 speed transmission issues on other trucks, electrical issues with nav, on other trucks and now this.

Please keep us posted on what they find. Hopefully not another case of "rodents eating the main wiring harness"

BTW....I just installed my SPC control arms and broke that exact bolt. The first one felt a little weak and the second one broke. Good luck!

Battery issues were tracked down to a faulty alternator that was determined to not be charging the battery normally. Everything was checked for shorts or abnormal draws and nothing else was found. The truck has been in the shop for 6 days for testing and waiting for a backordered replacement alternator. Nothing was found that was related to the suspension install. I get the truck back today. Everything was done with no charge to me. ToyotaCare assigned a case manager, but this was of no value since I had Eric Murphy (fellow Mudder) at CBT emailing me daily with updates.

Just got word from CBT that despite a new alternator, electrical system behavior is still not normal. They are in communication with Toyota engineers. No estimate on a completion date. Gonna have to rent a Suburban for our Christmas road trip.

If it's under warranty get it fixed or they buy it back ?

Solved (hopefully). After install of new battery and alternator, it was still not right. The tech examined connections and did find a loose connection from junction box to alternator. This was intermittently faulty as the engine vibrated. Unclear if this perhaps damaged the first alternator. I took delivery of the vehicle with a new battery and alternator. No charge, of course. No issues over the past 12 hours.

Thank you to Camelback Toyota.
