2017 200 LC Steering Wheel Leather issues

The cruel reality is that this issue has never been rectified in any of the 2016+ LCs. It is just a matter of luck or time until it happens.

I have seen newer as 2020s with the same peeling effect. Hell, my 2020 HE has a similar little peel like the one above, just in a different spot. I baby it as much as I can and try not to touch much, but the older they get the more likely the issue will appear, hence why you see lots of 2016, 2017, etc with peeling wheels, as opposed to 2021s.

However look again in 5 or 6 years from now and you will see the 2020s and 21s peeling the same. At least for the NA market I do not believe Toyota ever changed the leather. Since I can't stand the aftermarket wheel covers and like the heating function, the only solution is to bite the bullet a couple years from now and replace with OEM. Again, with no guarantees the issue won't return.

The craft customs vendor might be a way out too, but I would like to see the results first. Any guinea pigs willing to try and show the results here?
The 2016-2017 steering wheels look like a rat chewed on them even when they were only 1-2 years old. There was definitely a change in 2018 IMO. I can't ever recall seeing a 2018+ seeing similar conditions as the 16-17 trucks. I could be wrong and probably biased since I have an 18+ :)

I have now owned a 2017 and a 2020HE. There is no difference in material from one to the other. Exact same texture, feeling, softness, etc. My 2020 already has a small nick to it and I fully expect to have to replace it in a couple of years. While looking to buy my current HE, I saw several 2020s and 2021s with similar nicks and even one with a big section "rat-chewed" like you said. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think we all should expect the same. Like I said, it is just a matter of time and the more you use it the less time.

I replaced my 2016 wheel with the fully leather OEM wrapped wheel, and the shipping took a few weeks from Toyota since it appears that part had to be ordered from overseas.

Anyway, I can say the new fully leather wrapped wheel feels much better than even my previously owned 2021 HE or 2016 cruiser stock wheel. At around 8,000 miles, it’s wearing in and feeling very supple… I’ll have to grab some pics this afternoon.

Would you have a link to this Toyota part? I assume something only offered on models overseas?

Yes please, pics or it never happened.

It definitely happened. He posted about it in his thread. I put the same wheel on mine with good results.

Credit all goes to Zill, but here is the part number.

Part: 45100-60A91-C0

I must admit, the leather did feel similar to the stock US wheel when I first got it, but it’s aged much better than the US wheel.

Will have pics soon after work.

Nice. This might be the best alternative. Although looking with the part number in google, it appears the price is pretty close to the OEM wheel (the one with the wood sections). Call me weirdo, but I actually prefer the wood and I am not even that old. ;) The challenge will be finding the wood one with the HE bronze stitching. That is probably one item for the "unobtanium" thread.

I actually like the (fake) wood wheel as well, and generally hold the wood part more than the leather which makes the ripping of the leather on my 2016 even more inexplicable. But I’ll gladly go with the all leather version if the leather is more durable than the one I have. Zill, any further thoughts on durability?

Got a few spots too left on my 2017. It’s at 80k miles and I can’t imagine how it’s going to looks at 500k miles.

At 8,000 miles on the all leather heated wheel, it’s wearing in very nicely. Starting to get that leather patina feel to it, and is one of the best upgrades I have made to my rig.

The main benefit being, you get much more grip on the steering wheel, and helps with the harder steering of the LC 200 (compared to the slippery plastic wood).

Nice, I did the Amazon Lokney (or whatever) leather wheel cover. Came out nice but a PITA to do since I pulled the steering wheel and did it out of the car which was probably way easier than doing it attached. I actually really like the thickness it gave the wheel and covered the fake wood..

Above is my new wheel. I had a local dealer replace the original on my 2016, the original wheel was a huge mess. The leather on the new one feels more stiff and durable. I really like the feel of the new wheel. Time will tell on how it holds up.

How do you like the full leather wrap feel compared to the wood?

Unlike some others, I liked the (fake) wood wheel. I generally drive with hands at 10 and 2 on the wood section…making the ragged tears in the original leather even more inexplicable. But I like the feel of the new wheel a lot. The leather feels more firm and durable than the leather on the original…I hope I’m right about durability.

My wife thinks replacing the wheel was unnecessary, but I hated the pitted, torn leather, and I couldn’t find an upholstery shop local to me that was willing to recover my original wheel. The new wheel feels great and makes the vehicle feel new again; my 2016 looks and drives like a new truck, with the torn up steering wheel as the only “tell” of the vehicle’s age. I plan to keep my LC200 forever, so I don’t mind spending $ to keep it looking good.

Nice. Would you mind telling how much did you pay and the part number they used?
