Had 16, 20 and now 21 LC. Never steering wheel issue. Problem is chemicals from your hands. Don't use lotions and when using sanitizers, let hands dry first before you touch the wheel.

I am told by someone at the dealership that the material for the steering wheel leather was changed for the 2017 model but was changed back to the earlier material from 2018 onwards and these problems are therefore generally seen only in 2017 vehicles.

My 2004 gwagon had same issue with leather wear and to replace the wheel was $1200.. ended up selling the truck and left the wheel as is.... Now, I'm in the mkt for a 2016-2018 and yes, I noticed that wear on a 100k mile 2017 model... what aboutthe grey and terra leater seating? as time passes, does the leather wear well or what to expect?

I have access to used steering wheels here in Dubai... Mint ones cost $950 to ship. Paypal accepted. Shipping via DHL/Fedex.

The early variant steering wheels are also available (2008-2015)

thanks!

I checked out a 16 LC few months ago at the local Toyota store. had 40k miles and the steering wheel and shifter leather were in very bad condition. I asked if they were going to replace the wheel- they said they'd look into it. Went back few days later to look at it again, and all they did was add a super cheap wheel cover.... and they wanted 65k for it.. amazing!

There's some decent cheap leather sew on steering wheel covers. I forget the brand but they are around 65 dollars I have one just haven't had time to install. Seems like a good compromise until wanting to fork over 450 yo get it reupholstered or alot more for a replacement.

Cool! Can you get other interior parts?
I want to replace the plastic wood cover which holds the remote and head phones on the rear seat middle console. Can't find a part # for it though.

I know, I know, first world problems, but this is my wife's LC and eventually mine. Its got roughly between 50-55k miles. The leather is coming apart in the lower left portion of the steering wheel and growing. I cant see where it was ever nicked or cut and it started small but now getting bigger and I can see it eventually peeling off of a larger area. Interior leather and trim is specifically excluded on the extended warranty. Any good way to fix it? I feel like something isn't right with the leather, I also cant say its because of something we did. I also think I'm SOL with getting Toyota to take care of it. I've got a 2015 Tundra that is abused and my steering wheel is just fine. Anyone had this happen or have any luck getting it fixed?

The leather in my 2016 steering wheel looks absolutely terrible. Outer layer has torn off all over the place. I don’t use hand sanitizer or lotion. Junk quality leather.

I’ve called multiple auto upholstery places and no one will bother with a steering wheel, other than to put on a leather cover like the links above. I would prefer a fix that keeps the original look of the factory wheel. I can order a new steering wheel from $800-$1200, but then I’m sure installation will cost on top of that. And I potentially have the same junk leather on a new wheel.

Has anyone found a solution, other than the whole wheel covers linked above?

As noted above by the other poster, I believe this was rectified in 2018+ LCs, mine included. 6 years, still fine. If you buy a new OEM steering wheel, it's most likely it will be fine. Going OEM also makes sure all factory functions remain. The 20-25% dealer sale is still going for 2 more days: FYI - Toyota Parts from Dealer 25% off and Free Ship thru 2/26 - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/fyi-toyota-parts-from-dealer-25-off-and-free-ship-thru-2-26.1332895/page-6#post-15605529

I think I posted this once before but I sent my 25year old T100 Leather wheel to these guys and got back brand new leather wrapped wheel 300+ including all shipping etc... Only bad thing is that it is a 1 to 1.5 week process start to finish so no vehicle that long. Also these guys can change leather color/type/etc... My 2016 is at 100K miles and leather is starting to go bad. This is where mine is going in next few months.

I’ve heard that before but I’m not sure it’s actually the case. This has appeared on my 2019…
noted. sorry to hear, it’s very rare for me to see it here on the forums or even listings of LCs for sale. maybe I haven’t been paying much attention. my factory wheel still look good. Though I do think the 2016+ leather doesn’t feel tough to begin with.

I am prepared to splurge on the factory all leather replacement when my time comes. what’s the plan for your replacement?

The cruel reality is that this issue has never been rectified in any of the 2016+ LCs. It is just a matter of luck or time until it happens.

I have seen newer as 2020s with the same peeling effect. Hell, my 2020 HE has a similar little peel like the one above, just in a different spot. I baby it as much as I can and try not to touch much, but the older they get the more likely the issue will appear, hence why you see lots of 2016, 2017, etc with peeling wheels, as opposed to 2021s.

However look again in 5 or 6 years from now and you will see the 2020s and 21s peeling the same. At least for the NA market I do not believe Toyota ever changed the leather. Since I can't stand the aftermarket wheel covers and like the heating function, the only solution is to bite the bullet a couple years from now and replace with OEM. Again, with no guarantees the issue won't return.

The craft customs vendor might be a way out too, but I would like to see the results first. Any guinea pigs willing to try and show the results here?
