I talked to the F&I guy at my Toy store (Lithia) and he said he couldn't sell me a Toyota ext warranty due to the mileage (over factory warranty) of both LC's. That's strange because I bought my current '01 from Toyota of Plano in Sept '04 and it had 45K . Man, this sound a bit strange ?? I don't know why the guy would not be truthful since obviously I was wanting to buy the service plan from him...Something just doesn't seem right that I couldn't get a Toyota warranty on a Toyota product. :hhmm::hhmm:

2004 has 51,000 miles---> At a Hummer dealership
2006 has 44,000 miles---> At a Honda dealership

I guess I could go on and get a certified LX and avoid all of this !! But then no ARB deluxe bar and I'm really not a "Lexus" person....:crybaby:

Is the extended warranty on your '01 an actual Toyota Financial Services warranty? While it may say "Toyota" on it, often they are not actually administered by Toyota Financial. Since they're after-market, there is no Toyota corporate restriction on them, and most after-market companies will issue warranties long after the factory warranty runs out.

Ok, getting to be decision time ! Here are my options :

A) 2004 w/ 3yr 45,000 mile ext warranty----> $36,000.00

B) 2006 w/ 4yr 48,000 mile ext warranty----> $44,100.00

C) Keep my 66,000 mile 2001 and spend some $$ on front/rear ARB bumpers, maybe get some performance upgrades, get a major interior and exterior "freshening" (aka: detailed), get the NAV reader fixed, get the sound system improved upon (already done speakers) with a sub-amps and a sound processor, etc -----> approx $4,500.00

It's not like I really need a newer 100 but I really do prefer the 2003+ 100's. My '01 is in very good condition and won't take a huge amt of money to "fix up". I know what I have in my '01. Most of the bugs should have been worked out by now, especially since I got a new tranny last summer. I realize this isn't a very important issue on the grand scale of things, but...What you guys think ? Money really isn't the issue here, it's more in the line of "what will I be happiest" with !! I like the 100 series because it fits in my garage, I am very comfortable in it, I like the looks (lots more than the 200 series), there are plenty of aftermkt parts, blah...blah...blah !!

:cheers:

I'm digging this thread as I've been going down the same road. Upgrade to an 04-06, or keep building my 2000? I know what I have in my 2000, have no complaints about it, etc. The 5 speed and newer interior would be nice, but is it really needed? Although there really is never an "end" too the mods, with a Slee rear bumper, some lockers and gears in my 2000, I'm pretty much done. Hmmmmm. :hhmm:

I checked the srvc agreement which is now expired on my 2001 and yes, it was a GOLD TOYOTA service plan. I got on the TFS site and found this concerning used vehicle service plans:

"Platinum Protection
Our highest level of extended service coverage for virtually every component group in your vehicle. If your vehicle component does not appear on our List of Excluded Components , it is covered by Used Vehicle Platinum. Coverage terms range from 1 year/12,000 miles to 5 years/60,000 miles. To qualify, your used vehicle must be a current model year or within the last 6 model years fewer than 100,000 total miles." The reason he gave me was because of the mileage both had past the 36,000 factory warranty was too high.

I can't imagine why the F&I guy at my local dealership said that neither the 2004 (51,000 miles) nor the 2006 (44,000 miles) would qualify for a service plan !! :hhmm::hhmm::hhmm:

If I am missing something here, please someone enlighten me !!

Man, I went through the same thing. The only thing that was consistent is that every person I talked to said something different. First, I was looking at an '03 private party with ~50K miles. I talked to the Toyota dealership and told them I would buy a warranty from them, so they wanted to inspect it. Took it in, they inspected it and say they would warranty it. Ended up NOT getting that vehicle. Next one I was looking at, I talked to somebody else at the same dealership and they said Toyota cannot provide an extended warranty on a vehicle that is already out of warranty. In other words, they'll only do it if it's still under the 3yr/36K. Went back & forth with them, reminding them that they just inspected one for me and they told me they would warranty it, etc just a few days ago. Round and round we went. "yes we can", "no we can't"... etc etc.

It was downright weird. In hindsight, the only thing I can think of is maybe there was some confusion about gold vs platinum? Like maybe they can only offer platinum if it's still under warranty, gold if not? I don't know. The one I ended up getting had 3 days left of original warranty.... so that was easy... didn't get the runaround on getting that one extended.

I Feel Ya!

Been doing some extended warranty research myself as I (not-so :rolleyes:) slowly convince myself to go the '03-'04 100 route...same story, despite attempting to enlighten them with the exact same quote from the TFS website, multiple dealers are telling me multiple stories...including that they and/or TFS doesn't or won't offer the TFS extended service coverage. Only got one straight quote, another told me it's from I.S.D. (in service date) so I couldn't get one for an '03. Still haven't heard back from TFS directly. I'd want to max out with the 5 year/60K mile version, since the (aftermarket) extended warranty on my 80 way more than paid for itself within the first year or so (HG, computer)...and that NAV unit (or rather the potential repair/replacement tab) makes me nervous...

So...is the TFS Platinum from In Service Date or from the date/mileage you purchase the warranty?? :confused:

I don't know about the 5yr/60K, but the 7yr/100K platinum warranty I got is... 7yr from date vehicle was purchased and 100,000 mi total miles on the vehicle.

Good timing on the 3 days left on original factory warranty!

Was the 7 yr/100K mi from in service date part of it being Toyota Certified, or a TFS extension of the original warranty (since it hadn't run out)?

I think the 2nd one, if understand your question correctly.
It was a CPO LC that we bough from a dealership out of state. That dealership actually did not even offer TFS extended warranties. They had their own proprietary warranty that they were trying push on us. So we went to a local dealership to buy the 'real' Toyota warranty... even though we were not in physical possession of the vehicle yet. They told us that because it was CPO and still within warranty (just by a thread.. yeah, good timing) that they did not need to look at the LC. So I think the CPO thing just made it easier in the sense that it had already been inspected and cleared, so they didn't need to do so again.

Wow, does all of this seem to be wayyyyy too complicated than it should be !!! ?? :bang:

I will say this though...Buying from CarMax really does sound appetizing after seeing and hearing all the run around concerning the TFS BS. I have only bought 1 vehicle from CM but the entire transaction was very smooth and the service plan I got from them was excellent. I don't know when car buying became such a PITA ? Only thing that I wasn't pleased with was the vehicle I bought had some kind of overspray all over it. A clay bar, wax, and a buffer fixed THAT !!

:cheers:

Does Toyota (or Lexus for that matter) CPO 7/100K cover NAV? That's probably my #1 concern and reason for obsessing over extended service coverage...

The TFS Platinum does cover the nav, Gold does not. I don't know about the Lexus, try their web site.

Decision has been made !!

I have decided to go with the 50,000 mile Thunder Cloud 2004 LC . I've gone ahead and given them a deposit by cc and will pick it up on Friday. So that means 4 days of agonizing waiting. Also, it looks like my 2001 LC will stay in the family. I'm going to give it to my sister and rid the family of her POS '03 Explorer. I'll go on and trade the Ex on the '04 LC. Something I hadn't noticed before but the '04 LC has the now hard to find "black pearl" emblems, too cool. The next step is to order a set of front mud flaps cause those hiddeous runningboards are coming off immediately. Not too sure about the tire situation but that will probably be mod # 2. Not sure what route to go on tires yet. I've been a BFG AT disciple for a long , long time but I might be open for a bit of a change. Michelin AT's? Revos? BFG MT's, maybe ? :grinpimp:

:cheers:

When you pickup the 04, swap the wheels from your 01. That way your sister can have the "luxury" of having 18" wheels while you have a better selection of offroad tires in 16".

Congrats on the new truck! Good year, too. The black pearl does look cool, makes the "Land Cruiser" script stand out much better, yet somehow is less bling than the chrome. Well, my $0.02 anyway...

Yep, already decided to swap the wheels. Great minds think alike !!

derek,
what's with that stock rear bumper??? ;)

Wow I didn't know ex-wives could be that useful.... Trade em in on Land Cruisers, what a deal !!! :D

Don't hate on me man! ;)

I'm just waiting for Amando to get going on his replacement bumper, so I can have the one on his truck. He was up here two weeks ago just teasing me with his bumpers (both front an rear).

UPDATE....

OH, S:):)T !! Had everything ready for the out of town trip to go look at and most probably buy the 2004 LC on Friday . Then, had to run to my house an check on everything before I left and then what happens ?? I walk down a hallway to go into my master bedroom and I hear some dripping sound..Hmmm, did I accidentally leave some water running somewhere? Oh no....!! I walk into my bedroom and there it is. About half of my ceiling is lying on my floor with water dripping everywhere !! Apparently a pipe running to my water heater (in my attic, I know, bad idea but I didn't put it there) has broken and now I have a major problem on my hands !! Long story short...Call the guy where the LC is and explain what has happened in my house. At this point I have contacted the insurance company and hopefully they will be at my place sometime early this week. I have numerous plumbers, water restoration people, electricians, contractors, etc, come to my place to see what needs to done next. Not sure how much will be covered by my insurance, supposedly plumbing sometimes isn't fully covered. Told the salesman I will contact him as soon as I know more. Looks like a new LC might have to be put on the proverbial "back burner" for a while !! OH, the joys of home ownership !! :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby:

ahh..!! Call em and give a $5,000 deposit over the phone with your credit card !
