I recently purchased a used 2004 LC that is as quiet as a tomb up to 35 mph and then develops a noticeable wind noise at speeds above 35 mph. I can't isolate where the noise is coming from but it sounds as if one of the windows is open a crack (but none are). I read older posts about checking all the seals and weather strips so I checked all of them and they look fine.

Any suggestions and comments on:

1. Anyone else with similar experience
2. Isolating the source of the noise
3. Possible causes and remedies

Also, the car only came with 1 key/remote...does anyone know how much it is to buy another from a Toyota dealer?

Thank you in advance for your help.

For a whole new key talk to cruiserdan. He can get you a great board discount. I would recommend getting a new camry-type master key and seperate camry-type remote. That would eliminate the $200 case problems many of us have with the poorly designed key remote combo. Crusierdan has a fix that will probably work, will save a little money and give you a better key in the end.

No help on the wind noise. But when I recently went over about 105mph the rubber gasket on the moon roof airdam came loose and started beating on the roof like mad. I thought the roof had peeled off. But the gasket went back on and I haven't had any problems at reasonable and prudent speeds.

Does it have a new windshield? A lot of the times the windshield doesn't get installed properly.

Is one of the back quarter windows open slightly? Try opening them completely and closing again. I'm grasping at straws.

Do you have roof racks? The one in the rear on mine was slightly loose and was whistling. Also, I got one of those cheap plastic wind damn things to put in front of the sunroof, and that made a big difference.

It doesn't have a new windshield as far as I can tell. I also looked at the rubber seal around the windshield to make sure there aren't any gaps in them that would cause the sound.

I suspected the rear quarter windows first so opened and closed both sides to make sure they were tightly closed to no avail.

It has a roof rack and crossbars. The crossbars are pushed together towards the back of the car. I had another car where the crossbars over the moonroof would cause wind noise so I moved the crossbars to the back of the car.

I actually like the integrated key/remote design. What is the "$200 case problems" folks have experienced?

Part of the reason the case cracks is because (I found out) is that the screw becomes loose over time, so now I have a screw driver in my door pocket to check it from time to time. Which is often.

As for the windshield noise, The black strip on the sides of the windshield are supposed to be riveted on, some installers doen't do this part so it makes noise. Also if the same black strips are somewhat deformed, they will make noise as well.

My key case broke as well and I just bought another one on eBay for $73 (included shipping). The local Toyota dealer here in Northridge, CA charges $48 to cut and program the key.

Based on previous posts, it is crucial to have a second key because if your master key goes bad or you lose it - then it will cost somewhere in the thousands to get a new master key since it will involve a new computer chip.

Is saw many uncut LC remote keys for model years 1998 - 2002...did they change the keys for 2003 onwards or will they work for my 2004 LC? I noticed "programming instruction" is included with these uncut keys...will programming the key include synchronization with the engine immobilizer?

Sorry for all the newbie questions...

"will programming the key include synchronization with the engine immobilizer?"

Yes. There is separate programming for the remote and the engine transponder. I don't know about 2003+ compatibility. Maybe ask a locksmith or dealer.

I think that if you buy one of the combo key/remote units it will eventually break. What fails is the plastic case which Toyota does not make available as a seperate part. So your only option is a whole new unit ( or ebay scrounging for a used unit) . The seperate key and remote will probably last as long as the truck.

I also hear a wind noise that sounds like a window or somethings cracked. Cant seem to figure out where its coming from either. Mines a 99.

A friend of mine bought a new '03 (2 yrs ago) and complained that there was some wind noise coming from the front of the vehicle, either around the front wheel wells, radiator fan, or bumper. Don't know if he every solved the problem. If it weren't the front of the vehicle, I would have suspected a seal in the moonroof/metal vibration in the frame or something.

Just in case its your roof racks, get a couple of long "bungy" cords(a stretchy strap) and hook it to one side of your roof rack then wind it around the bar all the way to the other side and hook it on. Do the same for each bar. The twists need to be within about eight inches of each other. This usually causes enough interference to get rid of the whistling noise and you will notice if the noise has gone or is different.

My LC had developed a whistling noise while crusing at speeds above 50mph coming from the moonroof. After sliding the roof crossbar in the front of the roofrail all the way to the back, the whistling is gone. I did it hoping that it would help with the gas mileage a tad, but got this unexpected pleasant surprise.

It has a roof rack and crossbars. The crossbars are pushed together towards the back of the car. I had another car where the crossbars over the moonroof would cause wind noise so I moved the crossbars to the back of the car.
