My response is directly proportional to your questions. You post up pics with clearly no maintenance done, things tried, etc. Just a video. So sorry if you are mechanically inclined and can do the work. Get to work and get it sorted. The advice and things to check so far are all valid.

I bought the car 4 days ago, and I’m not familiar with the 4wd systems and electronics of this platform. It’s the first GX470 I’ve had, and I know there have been some rear end TSBs for these trucks so I figured I’d ask in case you guys had anything similar happen. I havent had time to do anything with it yet, and the previous owner obviously didn’t make my job any easier

Any links to replacement driveshaft/slip yokes that are of good quality? Might need to replace the rear diff too I’m assuming

Depends on what you want to pay. Were it me looking to get it sellable quickly, I'd jump on car-part.com and look from one from the South that isn't rusted out from a seller that will ship, replace the u-joints, grease the slip yoke, and move on to other work. Maybe ask them if they can include the flange nuts and bolts. You may or may not already know, but you can cross-shop 4runner and FJ Cruiser to 2009 - same platform.

Thank you! I did not know that they were the same platform. I love car-part.com. Good call!

Just to be clear - model years 2003 to 2009 GX, 4Runner, FJC. Some 2010+ parts may cross-reference, but if you want to be sure, '03-'09.

This sounds exactly like the GX I bought last year. The cause of the noise is the transfer case chain slipping. Based on the pictures you have shown of the leaking transfer case it was likely ran dry causing the transfer case to overheat and the chain to stretch. The noise is actually the chain jumping teeth on the gears. I would be happy to show you pictures of what mine looked like during R&R.

That would be great! Thank you
