First of all, I want to give props to skshepherd for the speaker install thread, and to dnp for the door removal process. They have provided the road map for removing the door panels and installing speakers. Without their info, I would not have started the project.
The purpose of my thread is just to add a bit of info of what else you may possibly encounter when you crack open your door to replace the OEM speakers. I encountered some slight differences with my 2002 LC front door speakers and a slight challenge with the SPS-610C Alpine speakers I installed. You may encounter the same issue with other speakers, so I just wanted to share my experience.
The first difference I noticed was that my speakers did not come in a plastic “basket” type housing that needed cutting away, as was the case with skshepherd’s install. My JBL factory speaker is metal and was screwed in and glued to the plastic housing that fits into the door. I simply removed the screws and used a flat head screwdriver to pry the speaker from the housing. See below photos. 4th photo shows the original speaker sitting next to the plastic housing.
