First of all, I want to give props to skshepherd for the speaker install thread, and to dnp for the door removal process. They have provided the road map for removing the door panels and installing speakers. Without their info, I would not have started the project.

The purpose of my thread is just to add a bit of info of what else you may possibly encounter when you crack open your door to replace the OEM speakers. I encountered some slight differences with my 2002 LC front door speakers and a slight challenge with the SPS-610C Alpine speakers I installed. You may encounter the same issue with other speakers, so I just wanted to share my experience.

The first difference I noticed was that my speakers did not come in a plastic “basket” type housing that needed cutting away, as was the case with skshepherd’s install. My JBL factory speaker is metal and was screwed in and glued to the plastic housing that fits into the door. I simply removed the screws and used a flat head screwdriver to pry the speaker from the housing. See below photos. 4th photo shows the original speaker sitting next to the plastic housing.

Next, I noticed two raised rectangular pieces on the plastic speaker housing that prevented the new speakers from resting flush. I took a dremel tool with a cutting wheel and took cared of ‘em. Not pretty, but flat enough for my purpose. Next two photos show before the ‘nub’ and after.

I'm having trouble loading the pics for this thread--please stand by.

I think you might need to buy a start to post more than a certain amount of pics? Or host them somewhere else and link them.

Yeah, I did some research and saw that I may be limited in my attachments? I may have to link this. What a fail thread. Do I have to buy or pay to add more images? I was looking forward to posting this...sigh.

nah, it'll be an awesome thread. $20 for a star is the best cruiser money you'll ever spend...

I am totally with you. I am planning on replacing the speakers in the very near future and would love to see another thread on this. Also would like to know what made you choose the Alpine speakers and benefits of them over the Polk/MB/Phoenix Gold speakers others have gone with.

Thanks everyone. I tracked down the 'silver star' subscription info and am establishing a pay pal account today. Will re-attack and finish this thread ASAP. Sorry for the delay.

Subscribed... I too have that Leatherman (red version:D).

para - you can only attach 3 pics per post. So to attach 7 pics, you'll need 3 posts (first post with 3, second w/ 3, and third with 1).

Or, join the membership group for an unlimited amount of pics per post.

You can only upload 3 pictures. Star or no star.

Unlimited posting comes from photo-bucket where you copy the image tags and paste them as text.

OK, I'm going to try this again tonight. Are you saying 3 pics max per post or per thread? I've got my silver star now. I want to make sure I do this right the second time, before I make a real mess of this thread. And I thought the speaker install was a challenge.

  • 3 pics per post regardless of star status if you are uploading the images.
  • As many pics per post regardless of star status if you are hosting them somewhere else and linking them here.
  • With a star, as many posts per thread as you want that contain max 3 uploaded images.
  • Without a star, and without hosting your images somewhere else, you can still do multiple posts per thread, each containing 3 uploaded pics, but there is a max (I think 10? a mod will jump in if I got the number wrong) total uploads you can have, so you're write up will get cut short if you plan on more than 10 pics without a star - or hosting somewhere else.
I'm sure the speaker install was less complicated... Browse the FAQ link above, or the help section for more info.

Let's try this again

When I put my new speakers into the plastic housing, I noticed that although this was a 6.5” speaker, the screw slots fell short of the screw holes in the plastic housing. New speakers are Alpine model SPS-610C. I held the new speakers up to my housing at the store and it looked like a nice tight fit, but this wasn’t the case. It worked out fine, but just a heads up to check the screw down points.

My fix was using new #8 screws with a larger head/built in washer, to help ‘grab’ the speaker and hold it tightly in the plastic housing. I got these at ACE hardware. I also used some super sticky (read outdoor) mounting tape to help hold the speaker in place and to help dampen any rattling caused by plastic-on-metal contact between the speaker and the housing. The same mounting tape I used to mount the tweeter, just like skshepherd’s build. I gotta say that it holds pretty dang tight. Last pic is new speaker mounted in plastic housing.

After I got the new speaker in, I took the original wire plug that went from the plastic housing to the oem speaker and simply cut the wire and added female attachments so they would fit in the new speakers. I tried to save them from the black harness/plug so I didn’t have to cut, but that was just not happening. Black plug had a death grip on the female connectors and jacked em up trying to remove them. Did that come out right? My jargon is hurting. Bottom line, don’t throw away or cut any wires until you have everything set up. I almost did this and would have had to splice/solder.
