2001 LX transmission failure..

Well after a couple months of ownership, my transmission gave up the ghost today. I had some clunking in the drive line, but it wasn't bad and I had attributed it to the famous clunk that is all over the forum. Well today I had just put it in reverse when I heard a terrible noise and after that it would just make a grinding noise if you put it in any gear.

I had it towed to a local shop so I'm waiting for a diagnosis but I don't have a good feeling about it.

So if its really done, is the general consensus to get a re-manufactured one from Toyota?
 
Well false alarm! I didn't think to try and lock the CDL yesterday before I had it towed. Just drove over to the shop that had it and sure enough it drive fine with the CDL locked.

Has anyone done that repair themselves? From what I can tell by searching I'm going to need a new axle and a new outer flange???
 
Long story short, I was able to get a new flange from a local Toyota dealer. I couldnt get the stupid thing off to save my life and I had a week long trip coming up so I took it to a local mechanic. The outer axle and flange were trashed. It feels much tighter now obviously :)

Yep, I see you'd never get that flange to snap ring gap to FSM spec. nor ring to hold. I'd say old owner did not do bearing packing every 30K as recommend and/or did not spec out gap.
 
Why do our drive flanges give way? Is it play I between the CV splines and drive flange splines that knock down the teeth? I've put mine through torture, I'm starting to wonder if I should get a spare just to have.

OP: keep that flange and machine it out. That way, if you ever blow your front diff, you can install machined smooth flanges on the front and remove the drive shaft. That saves having to pull CV's on the trail. (Spressomon's advice a from a few years back).
