Can someone help me. I had my front and rear brake pads replaced and all the rotors machined at 43k miles. Now 25k miles later only my back brakes are bad, needing new rotors. Does it make sense to anyone why the back brakes would go bad while the front brakes are still fine? I'm thinking my dealer may have overlooked replacing my rear brakes the first time...

sometimes the callipers are sticking causing premature wear of the rotors/brake pads.
have the callipers checked to make sure they don't have the slider pins sticking and that they are operational according to specs.
also, find out if one of the rear rotors and pads have more wear than the other side. that would point to a faulty calliper as well.
if not, then i would say what you mentioned could be the case...
good luck.

My 2000 did the same thing...

New pads at 52k

at 85k rears were shot and I needed new rotors, but fronts were better than 50%....

hmm. A friend of mine just told me the rear brakes on his '01 100 started squealing at 52K mi, apparently getting thin. He was suprised the rear pads would go before the front ones.

The 100 has a much better front-to-rear weight balance than most vehicles and the rear is designed to be heavily loaded so the rears may be set for more rear braking than most vehicles. Why should fronts wear more quickly? other than that they always have in all my other vehicles.

You really need to get the used parts from the mechanic when they do a part replacement. Then you know they were replaced and why.

IIRC the emergency brake will make adjustments when applied,(as does backing up) so if you are using the E brake than this may also contribute to your brake wear.

To me that sound about normal for break pad wear on the 100/470's. New they start at about 12/32's. It also depends on what type of driving and how your driving style is. For example if you do a lot of mountain driving they tend to wear faster. Did the dealer give you measurments of the brake pads? I try and sell brakes when they get down to 5/32's on the 470's(100's) at work due to the size/weight of the vehicle.

After looking at this Toyota demo on the
Star Safety System

I started to wonder if Electronic Brake Distribution and Brake Assist or an earlier form of them might be on our 100s. There has got to be some reason the master cylinders cost a $1000. It would also conveniently explain increased rear brake wear compared with other vehicles.
