2000UZJ's big HID thread - what, where and how

Customer service is being pretty nice to me. Apart from the fools that didn't check my advanced replacement order yesterday, they've been pretty good. The lady I spoke to even went and made sure they shipped my order today so I would get it by Friday (ROOOAADD TRRIIIPPP).

I'm just going to go ahead and post this in here. I have tried to read through most of this thread, but I still have a couple quick questions.

Anyways, I have been dormant on here since I traded in my 1994 :( sad day. But my dad still has his 2001. I just did an HID swap on my fog lights, on my Nissan Altima. The bulb was 9006 as well (Same as the LC low beam). I went with the DDM 9006 3000k 35w.

My questions are, is this install plug and play, assuming the use of the DDM 35w 9006 kit? In that no additional wires need to be run, no relays?

Other than that I think that's it. I just did the install last week on my Nissan, which included dropping the bumper, but it was pretty easy. I just would love to hear that the LC kit is just as easy. I understand that a retrofit is the way to go, but neither I or my dad have the time for that. He just liked my new hid's and wanted some for himself.

Hopefully someone can answer for me. DDM is selling the raptors for $25 now, so I'm getting low beams for my altima and possibly the 9006 for my dads LC to save on shipping.

Thanks guys, it feels good to back, but i miss my 80 so much!

Just ordered a set of 35W H3 4500K for my Hella 500s. I'll be interested to see the improvement.

Food for thought......

Out of curiosity, I sent an email to DDM asking if using their HID kit for the high beams was recommended. They responded very quickly and said that it is perfectly fine to install HIDs for the high beams and use them the same way you would a halogen high beam.

of course they will say yes, if they say no they won't sell any...

I've done some testing (as you saw one night lol), I have rapidly flashed the low beams upon cold start up for one minute, about a 3 seconds on, one second off continuously to test the ballast and so far no issues. I guess I'll be taking advantage of the warranty...

I wonder if they'll cover things like flashing the lights on and off every five seconds on the warranty...

Its not in there best interest to tell people to do something that will break the HID kits, when they offer lifetime warranty.

how will they tell...?

Didn't they tell you it wouldn't void the warranty? Besides, with the warranty and only costing $30, I'd say its worth the chance IMO.

In my mind too broad of a question, for which DDM gave you a very broad answer.

My question to DDM would be how do their ballasts handle rapid on/off cycles? In other words when I use the high beam flashers quickly on/off 3-5 times in a row does that damage or decrease the lifespan of either the ballast and/or bulb?

I would be curious to hear their official answer to that...

I did make sure to specifically ask about flashing the lights on and off quickly.......probably should have mentioned that in the previous post. You could always send them an email.....cant hurt.

ya, they said it would be fine.

flashing on and off rapidly could reduce the lifespan, in my eyes its not good for it. But with a lifetime warranty i'll do some field testing and report on MUD about my findings.

We should do some puddle dunk testing and high speed vibration testing:D

I was also thinking about the high beams... if the Bimmers can have em, why can't I? But I have decided to leave mine along for now. I like the reliability of leaving Mr. T's high beam design alone (also leaving the running lights alone), in case this recent installation doesn't work out and I am left running down a mountain round without any lights, I won't be totally dead in the water :)

For high's, I will probably end up doing the Hella conversion.

I might end up trying the high beams in HID, as 2000UJZ stated worst that happens is they die and you send them back for warranty replacement.

The DRL would be an issue, you can't run HID's in the high beam without disabling them. Which BTW Was the very first thing I did to my LC within days of picking it up. Snip one wire and DRL's are history.

The DDM thin ballasts (idk about the raptor ballasts) are filled with epoxy i believe, which helps protect it against moisture and vibration. I however, will not be volunteering my ballasts to this, as one of them is already kaput.

I was also thinking about the high beams... if the Bimmers can have em, why can't I?

Bimmers have either bi-xenons or normal halogen hi-beams. Bi-xenons are actually two headlights in one. It has a mechanical flap that controls the beam, so the headlights are not actually turned on or off between the high beam and low beam.

BMW's have a single hi-low bulb. What makes the high beam part is a little flap that opens up and allows the light to broadcast at a much higher elevation. When you toggle them you will hear a little "click", that is the mechanism going up and down.

Here is a video showing how that "bi-xenon" stuff at work

BROKEROB1,

What kind of projecters do you have? I have read throuh the wholw thread and dont see were you mention purchasing any...does the LX come with them and the LC doesnt? If you did buy them and put them in how?

Thanks

Robert
