2000 vs 2006 and double the price?

I haven't driven the other models but I like m 2002 with 75k miles for $15k. It was a bit pricey but I got black color which is what I like to have. I think the 2002 LX looks almost as pretty as the 2003 on the inside. I don't know much about the 5 speed but I love my LX and the 4 speed is nice to me. The only feature I really miss is the side curtain airbags.

I did right away upgrade to HIDs headlights and fogs for $300. EMS exhaust installed and headers coming soon. Super Charger is installed as of today and I am ordering a full custom Radar laser jammer for $1000 and had a front push bar installed and about to order a rear JAOS bar so I probably will have $20k into it once I am done.

If I had to do it again I might consider a low mileage 2000 for $10k and save the extra $5k for some other upgrades. Or I would plan to save more $$$ for a LX570 once they start dropping in price. My neighbor has a 2013 and I like the shape of the grill. Surprisingly of my 8 neighbors, 4 have LX470/570 among their fleet of cars. One of my neighbor is a Jeep Nut and the other a Audi Q7 fan.

You can figure $2-3k depreciation per year so that alone is $12-$18k. The 2000 would have a low mileage adjustment but per book it's not as much as you think. It always pays to get the oldest, lowest mile vehicle you like. Miles are harder than years.

That said, the 2000 has ATRAC and VSC yet retains a cable to the throttle body and replaceable stereo head. It's a nice feature set for a bargain of the 03+.

That said, I'd look for an 03 if I were to do it again just for the 5spd.

Thanks for all the input. Just not familiar with these "fancy" modern machines

Still trying to organize my thoughts after loosing the HIPHIP (my 80 series). I had built it about to the limits for a combination DD/trail. Still a wonderful machine for both, but maintenance was expensive pulling double duty (brakes, bearings, seals, etc....)

I think if I build another 80, I will just build it for the trail. On the other hand, I can't imagine driving anything other than a LC, so thinking of a 100 series for a DD. never had a vehicle with all the babbles and sparkle of these 100 series/470, but for a dependable DD, just seems hard to justify an extra 12k for a 5 speed and essentially the same drive train ?

Guess the additions between years aren't sinking in as big motivators for me.

Maybe it's just me.

The technology from my 1995 to a 2000 is almost over whelming, and I drove my FJ40 8 years before I fixed the am radio !!!

Excuse me, I think I'll go myface, tweet or twerk or something ......

Sounds like you'd be really happy with the '00 as a DD. Unless you plan on heavy towing, that's a pretty big premium for the 06 for a bunch of stuff it sounds like you don't really need or care about.

Your note above says an extra $12k, which if my math is correct means the 00 is $12 and the 06 is $24. At 75k miles, either of those is a really great deal!

May have been fast and loose with the math. (maybe factoring what I would actually offer, rather than thier asking price). Probably fair prices, but would not say great deals. Still it made me wonder why the spread, because all i could see was NAV screens, interior refresh, trim here & there, but seemed to be the same basic rig ( in fact rear locker stopped in 2000?) with little substantive performance changes. Make no mistake, all neat features, just wondering if it added up in my mind for what could end up being twice the cost after negotiations.

Thanks for the dialogue. I obviously have a lot to learn, and looking forward to doing so. Hope to be a much more informed contributor in the future. Now please excuse me, Mariner Baseball is about to come on the am radio.

2000- 75,000 OD- $16,175

So they don't use salt on steroids in anchorage like they do in the rust belt in the lower 48?

Downtown is probably as nasty as it gets with chemicals. Be everywhere else, not worth the expense to melt this much snow all winter. In this case, the 2002 was owned by a "snowbird" who only comes to Ak in the summer, and keeps the rig locked in the garage all winter (whence the low miles), and the 2006 is on kodiak island (whence the low miles), doesn't snow much but never stops raining.

2 great opportunities, let us know which one you get. You will know the one after you drive and inspect both of them. Good luck!

I'm not sure where you are in the world, but can you get your hands on a 105 series?

This would give you a vehicle which is closer to the 80 series in mechanics and reliability.

We never got them here and the number of people that are converting their 100 series Landcruisers from AHC to conventional springs/shocks is on the rise.

With age, the spring will sag and your the AHC will start to complain. I've had many people call and say that they wish that they'd never sold their 80 series and upgraded to the 100 series due to the AHC.

Michael, funny you mention that I just changed mine :)

Nope. My 1998 has lived outside in Anchorage for 15 years.... it needed new ball joints and sway bar hardware, but it doesn't have any rust. none.

Our roads are terrible relative to the lower 48, but we do not use salt at all in Anchorage as far as I am aware. It is generally too cold in winter for salt to depress the melting point enough to melt the snow. (That's why we have heated sidewalks).

They plow the roads and spread grit, but no salt.

Personally, I think salting the roads in the midwest and new england is a ploy by the auto industry to sell more cars; I don't really see that it helps road conditions much.

AKTundra- I thought you bought that LX from the auction>?
Have you gone to look at that 2000 w 75k miles?
Is it really owned by snowbirds and kept in the garage?

Not sure about the 2006 on Kodiak. Low miles 'cause there's nowhere to drive on Kodiak, but the environment there is rough on cars.

Assuming that both have been well maintained and have no rust, I'd pick the one with no nav.

And the 98/99 only had a rear locker, so if any 100 has "lockers", then they (or at least the front one) aren't factory.
