Hi everyone! New to the forum and just picked up a 2000 Lx470 with about 195k miles on her. I’m planning on just basic upgrades since these are very capable. Doing a few maintenance items but I have rust on the roof that I’m concerned about. The rubber pieces on the roof are torn off and left rust on where they originally were. Has anyone dealt with this issue? Tried searching for previous trends but only came up with moonroof related rust issues.

Also, can I replace these pieces? If so, what’s the part called? I tried searching for the part number but no luck. I didn’t try to remove them just in case it’ll cause more damage.

Or should I just have a body shop remove them and weld up any holes / paint over it.

Thanks in advance!

There was some discussion of those a few months back, a few others have had the same issue. The consensus was they are port installed, not factory original as many (including me) don't have them. They serve no functional purpose other than maybe preventing scratches if you were loading things on the roof rack. I'd imagine removing and having a body shop fix the rust is the best way to go. I'm guessing they must have used some kind of foam-based adhesive that traps water?

Edit: here is the other thread I was thinking of where this was discussed. Roof Rusting Through - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/roof-rusting-through.1257197/
