So I'm driving about 35 maybe 40mph, rpm's are right around 2000/2500. Then it just drops to about 1000 rpm's. it semi stalls/loses power then catches again.

Been doing it here and there but more so at slow speeds. It has done it whrn im on the freeway going 70mph though.

I'm out of town in San Diego, do you recommend a check up locally at a Firestone or Pep Boys (scary) or just pray I get back to Los Angeles tomorrow and wait till Monday and drop it at the mechanic that I trust and use??

I've read it could be the problematic transmission of year 2000 or possibly the transfer case?? I just replaced the starter a few moths ago which was a pretty big wallet hit. Truck has 75k miles

I was so excited about the new ARB bumper an now I'm nervous it's dying on me.

Thanks in advance for any help everyone.

Throwing a code yet? Probably a coil pack.

No code.... Yet. Will it stall on me and then code? I just want to be prepared. I think I'll be driving 50 in the grandma lane tomorrow.... Ugh

Coil pack sounds a gazillion times cheaper than transmission. That gives me some hope

Thanks trunk

I know The Truck Shop made you angry... but, I would go there before any other place. you cant beat the price and they know their stuff! If you feel they are treating you different for being a girl, call em on it! I don't see that in them... but it is San Diego and that does happen.

Another option is SD Trux. Be his prices are laughable and I just don't like him. But, he knows Toyota's!

I second James at the Truck Shop. He hid your best bet in San Diego to diagnose and fix it.

You remember that? Haha. Yea wasn't a huge fan at the time. However, I'd rather be safe and just have them check it out..... I know they have a crazy Saturday schedule. Maybe I will call them tomorrow before I leave.

Weird thing is when I was asking them to change out springs they didn't have parts In stock. So hypothetically they'd need to change the coil pack, they probably don't have it anyway.

Sd trux is cool. Haven't done any big enough services with him to feel his prices. When toyota dealer in Hollywood wanted to replace my leaky cv boots for some crazy price, John just clamped em for $50. Something like that....

If it's dying on you and stumbling it's not the trans. TPS/APPS or coil pack would be my guess. Bad trans would be slipping not loss power. Has it ever actually died or does it just go limp? Since you have a 2000 you still have a throttle cable. Next time it happens press all the way down until you feel the secondary spring catch. Beyond that you'll be manually opening the throttle plate with the cable. If that restores power then it's throttle electronics.

If it were throwing lights I'd thing it could also be VSC interjecting.

Stumbling is a great adjective. When it slipped I just let it catch itself. Next time it does I will do what you said and floor it.

Is all this electrical stuff bad / gonna be pricey ?

Yeah... I remember. I felt really bad after recommending them and you telling me you felt that way!

Any who, looks like some good tips here.... good luck with everything!

LCB (& Tare)-

The #7 coil pack went out while I was outta town in Vega$ last may; at first, it felt a little sluggish getting on the freeways followed by the engine almost stalling when taking off from intersections. When I got up to 45-50, it was better, but still hesitating and stumbling and wouldn't go above 55. Downhill. With tailwind. CEL lit up with VSC a little while later. Popped the OBD in and identified #7 as the issue. Ended up having a local LV indy shop confirm and replace the pack, and decided to have them do a few other PM tasks as long as they had the top off. Fixed the issues and Beastie back to her normal self.

At first I was concerned it might have had to do with (at the time) the new DT headers installed and/or cat-back proto/dev't, but nope, just one of those things that'll just die out.

The coil was ~$110 and decided to get another as a spare. If this happens again, it should be about a 10-15 minute change. Easy.

Ordered APPS from Dan at American Toyota along with a couple of other items I've been putting off. From my searching on here this would appear to be my problem. Only happens when it's cold out, VSC/TRAC and VSC OFF lights come on then turn off, low power then everything is fine, etc. etc. etc. Thanks for sharing about your problem and fix. Sounds like your symptoms were a little different then mine.

Had the mechanic check everything out when I went in for routine maintenance and he said everything was golden. Strange, hasn't happened again since I posted this way back when....
hmmph
