I have a 2008 200 4.5 V8 Diesel twin turbo with an engine that is showing all the signs of dying. (Massive knock, metal particles in the oil filter etc.)

It has done 500k km. Is it possible to do a partial overhaul (bearings only) or is it best to do an complete overhaul? I have also made some enquiries on imported and second hand engines in South Africa but without luck so far.

We do get "cheap" Lexus Petrol engines around here. Has anyone converted a 200 Diesel to Petrol?

I will appreciate advice on what to do and also information on where I can buy an overhauled motor from a reputable engineering outfit.

Thanks

I would think the first step is to take the engine out of the vehicle and open up the bottom end (oil pan) and look with a bore scope from the top and/or start taking things apart until you find the issue(s). Say a worn main crankshaft bearing(s) and crankshaft could be replaced. Severely damaged cylinder walls probably not, unless that is an option for the 4.5 diesel. Hopefully it is something less fundamental like a stretched timing chain.

As to getting advice, I would also look for a Land Cruiser forum with lots of Australian participants. They have diesels and will likely be more helpful. Here a lot of US based owners.

As to putting in a petrol engine, that seems more involved to me as the whole mechanical and more so electronic integration is probably quite complex, then again it perhaps can been done. Be good to ask around on multiple forums and find somebody who has actually done this.

With like 500kkm on the clock I would head for an complete engine overhaul if the state if the rest of the car justifies the work and money.

With that amount on the clock a partial one would probably mean you will have to open it in 2-3 years again.

If you order from partshops that do good prices like partsouq you can get oem overhaul kits and other stuff depending on the sparepart prices down there in SA.

So far luckily no experience with engine problems since my 200 diesel still runs like a little kitten with only two injector values a bit off (+1.9mm^3 on pot 2 and -1.5mm^3 on pot 6 ) while the limits are around -+3mm^3

Did you had a chance to get into techstream with a laptop to read out the motor values
