This is a project inspired by the switches that people have installed in their sunglass holders in the overhead console.

People are using the sunglass holder as a place to install Switch-Pros and SPod control panels, but there isn't one place to gather all of the information.

@Hurndog is working with Expedition Essentials to create a Switch-Pros panel to fit the '18 LC. Some have reported using a switch adapter for a Tacoma 3rd generation. @Eric Sarjeant and team have installed them in the same location in customer cars.

Let's use this as a place to collect some information and some pictures.

Note: the sunglass holder is not listed as a separate part.

2013 Land Cruiser

I just did a bunch of measurements on my 2013 land cruiser and got the following:

Inside to inside horizontal 6-3/8" . 164mm
Outside to outside horizontal 6-1/2" . 168mm
Height inside to inside 2-7/16". 59mm
Depth (fore to aft) 1-3/4" . 31mm

All measurements approximate.

Hey guys, I had a chance to test the fitment of the Switch Pros 9100 mount prototype from Expedition Essentials today. This is in my 2018 LC. Working with Expedition Essentials couldn't have been more seamless: fantastic customer support and high quality products.

Attached are a few photos of the mount. It's not wired up yet, but everything fits like a glove.

Probably a silly question, but how did you remove the sunglass holder from the console?

@CharlieS I used a trim removal tool to pop the front of the overhead console down. It's held in place with two tabs at the front of the console.

Steps to remove:
  • Pry open the two tabs on the inside top of the sunglass holder, underneath each tab is a phillips screw
  • Work a trim removal tool along the front half of the console while gently pulling down, this will disengage the tabs holding it in place.
  • The right side of the holder is held in place with a phillips screw
  • The left side of the holder just slides into a small hole in the console
  • There is a tension spring on the left side that needs to be removed as well

Basing on my 2020 LC, I’d like to add from Hurndogs direction above, **AFTER the first step of removing the screws from the inside top of the sunglasses holder, dont pull down from the front as these 2 tabs i marked with red arrows are actually hook hangers that could get ripped off. Pull from the aft/back side as it only have button sockets there, marked in red circles. When you carefully drop the backside all the whole assembly after two and hook the front tabs.

Very nice!

Would love to see more details about this install, e.g. how did you run the wires? where are the base and mic mounted?

Thanks!
@carrera mike Very nice install. Can you please share the ^^ details. Looking at getting this radio and have been contemplating where to mount the controller.

Sure, thanks for the kind words. I bolted it from the back side and added velcro so the display doesnt roate. I mounted that late Oct '20 and its been unmovable(no sign loosening since). I belive I posted another thread of this install with more detail, you could just search for my post.
