Well the 200 that I was considering buying is a no go. I climbed underneath it everything looked good, no leaks and only minor surface rust, but then I looked at the backside of the two rear rims/tires. The dust/splash covers on the inboard side of the brake rotors were rusted out on both tires. I’ve never seen anything like it. I wish I took photos, but both covers had large areas that were rusted out to the point I could easily see thru them. The rest of the underbody appeared to look okay but I’m taking the rusted out plates as a warning.

I just need to be patient for the right one to come along.

Others have had the same issue. An expensive replacement due to labor involved.

I looked for a year, be patient and be ready to pounce! Every rig you pass on is a learning experience. When the right one appears you'll know.

Thank you, I think that’s going to be my strategy for the near future. I’ve also been looking at 2018/2019 Tundra Crewcabs so I’ll likely jump on one or the other when the right one comes up at the right price. I check many times a day to ensure I’ll be one of the first, if not the first, to respond to newly posted ads.

Thank you for that info, I searched for ‘rust’ and didn’t see anything about that area in the forums. Even my mechanic, who’s owned and worked on LC’s and LX’s for many years hadn’t seen one rusting out there. I can only imagine the costs...not a bill that I want to foot.

I bought my ‘11, in 2016 with 65k miles on it and it’s always been reliable in that it turns on, takes me wherever I want, and turns off.

That said, I like things perfect and my motor had a timing chain cover leak, cam tower leaks, and every spark plug tube leaked at the block end (the top seal was not the issue). Not like any of those would prevent you from going hundreds of thousands of miles, it just bothered. Whatever sealant or process back then was bananas because it’s super common on 5.7s till about 2014ish from what I’ve seen. But I don’t have any real data, just this one guys observation.

I’ve taken it apart and fixed all those failed sealants with some black Toyota FIPG. Only cost me about $400 in parts because while I had it apart, I put a new water pump on it but I left the radiator with “the line crack.” I mostly want to see how long it can go. I’m at 130k now (I daily a $2000 Jetta and the 200 is just for wheeling trips).
 

Wow, thank you 40Man. The plates shown in that thread look absolutely beautiful compared to the rusted out ones on the LX I recently looked at. It’s now a hard pass on that one and going to be the first thing I check from this point forward. Thank you to all the good folks here at Ih8mud for posting this information!

But what about time? I wonder what will be the effective and/or useful lifespan of 200-series? People tout "25-year design", but will it be? 200-series is not as complex as modern vehicles, it is ~2005 era design more or less, but complex enough with the onboard electronics.

Are we going to see many 200-series running around 25 years from now? 40 years?

Most of the ”technology” on the 200 is using pre-existing hardware. The only “new” hardware are the cameras and front radar for cruise control. Everything else is based on brakes and ABS: CRAWL, adaptive cruise, MTS, etc..

The extra airbags should age well. The electronics are pretty basic inside the car...not much different from 100-series.

The 5.7 V8 has proven itself over and over again. The 8-speed auto is reliable as any...it had some software issue when it first came out that has long been resolved.

The frame and surrounding structure (axles, transfer case, etc) are significantly more robust than any LC before it.

The LEDs (both outside lights and inside) on 2016+ models should outlast anything before it...and may outlast the LC itself.

The only things that may not be any better than previous LCs: windshield wipers and tires.
 
I guess it boils down to parts availability and electronics in particular. ECUs, gauge clusters, infotainment.

One of the sins of 200 is tying up some basic functions such as climate control to the infotainment. I believe rare early years without navi had manual controls and of course overseas variants are like that. Weren't it for this the truck would be quite old school...

Oh I wish my '11 was one of those. I worked on an '09 a few months ago and it had no nav or DVD... it was glorious.

If that was able to come with the cool box, it would be perfect.
