I have 2 what seems to be sensors just forward of the oil filter assembly on my 3B, anyone know what these are and where can I get new ones for my rebuild? 1 has 2 wires that attach and the other has one????

Thanks
Rob

If it is a large round thick one,its the oil pressure sender.
Without seeing a pic ,the other one would be coolant temp or oil level.
Some of the diesels have a coolant temp sensor for the glow system so a cold engine gets more glow time than a warm engine.

2 sensors on 3b

I believe on my cruiser they are Oil pressure sending unit and the other is low oil pressure sensor [cut off switch]?? The wires on mine are short and I had to extend then so they did not come loose. I suggest you save these and reuse them if at all possible, unless you can get exact duplicates ,ie the threads are finicky?? Ask me how I know this ??

i will try and see if I took any close up pics, actually I did just need to wait to I get some high speed internet so I can download, I know one is the round thick one. Thanks

Are they the same as these ones on my B engine Rob?

If so, they're actually on the oil cooler and IMO Joe's right. One is for the oil pressure gauge and the other is used to shut-down the engine (via the EDIC) if the oil pressure fails.

lost marbles you have a beautiful truck and so clean

Thanks

It's clean cos presently - Almost the only I thing I'm doing with it is "working on it" (largely because I "let it go" for many years till it got so rusty that I just HAD to do something).

Once the bodywork is all sound again, rust-free, and coated with paint etc and I've got my new lockers in and..... and.....- Then I'll start really getting it dirty again (to repeat the cycle). Except I'll try not ever leave it dirty.

But I'm not in any great rush. (I'm enjoying doing it up in my piecemeal fashion.) And I've owned 4x4s since the age of 16 which must make a difference to my "urgency".

I would like to take it out into the bush again soon though to get some off-road pics. (All my present off-road pics are in pre-digital slide format.) Hate for people to think it's a tarmac-only vehicle:D. (We got GREAT scenery to use here too.)

ok, finally got high speed internet back, here is the pic. just above the motor mount I take it is the oil pressure sender? and what is the one just to the left of that? I want to order new ones when I get my engine back from its rebuild.

Thanks for the help

one is the oil sensor the other is the low oil shutdown sensor.

If you want to know which is which Rob, the big one is the sender for the oil pressure gauge and the smaller is the "engine cut-out switch" for low-oil-pressure.

I found this out by disconnecting each one in turn with my engine running.

When I disconnect the big one - my oil pressure gauge gradually drops down to the "L" (nothing end of the scale).

When I disconnect the smaller one - nothing at all happens. So I'm guessing it must be a switch that "opens" once the oil pressure reaches a set level. (In other words - open-circuit indicates "good oil pressure".)

yeah sorry I should have clarified that in my previous post. Thanks!

thank you for that info, i needed it for I know nothing about this diesel but steadily learning thanks to all the helpful assistance.

Can I suggest re-using your old ones in your rebuild Rob? - Then if you still want to replace them later (once your vehicle is back on the road) - you can do so "at your liesure". Unlike other components (that may be difficult to access later) - These remain readily accessible.

If I was you, I would reserve my energy for more pressing things in the interim.

My sender and switch look better than yours only because of a coat of paint (that I applied roughly just to stop the rust on them). Mine are still 30 years old!

Every one of us is different - but I would find a "complete rebuild" like what you're doing to be really daunting. I would want to get it back in driveable-form ASAP to avoid becoming "overwhelmed" by the task in front of me (and losing interest).

...........Just my thoughts for what they're worth.

Lostmarbles, I understand where ur coming from and agree. This is where we r at now with teardown but have stepped back for a second to regroup for it is becoming already overwhelming. the body and all the wiring will be last, for now we are having the engine rebuilt, and the tranny and transfer, and third members are going out next while the frame and drivetrain is sandblasted, primed, and painted, so when all that comes back then we can put back on the frame along with its new suspension, motor mounts, and body mounts, and then the body and wiring will come after.

I originally wanted it galvanized but I am no where near that place now that cruiser is in FL. I just got qoute to sandblast, prime, and paint for $450 labor for all to include rearends and tie rods and skidplates and I buy the primer and paint, in which he told me to go with Marine epoxy primer and then dupont satin black paint, cant wait, I have to get the rest of the drivetrain off now and then after he is done I can start to put new OME suspension on and poly body mounts.

Man you can buy a pressurized snad blasting pot from harber frieght($60.00-$80.00) or i hired a guy with a tow behind commercial unit who came to my shop, and in two hours had everything i needed done completed. Charged me $150.00. A couple quarts of POR-15($80.00) and i was done. This stuff i truly the closes thing to powder coat that i've ever used. Just another option.
