1UZFE to H55? Anyone know what it would take? (1 Viewer)

(I posted this before in the Hardcore Corner, but I thought I'd see what the 60s group
thought, given more people here are running H55s)

Does anyone know what it would take to mate a Toyota V8 1UZFE engine to
a H55 5-speed tranny? Has it been done before? If so, was it a production
conversion or a custom setup? What sort of problems would there
be? Is the input end of the tranny shaft the right size for the 1UZFE pilot bearing.

How about bellhousing length and relative position? Would it be possible
with a production bellhousing to fab an adapter plate to fit between the
engine and the bellhousing or between the bellhousing and the transmission?

I've been able to find a lot of info on the 1UZFE, and a lot on the H55,
but almost nothing on the two of them together.

Much thanks for any help.

Assuming you could mate these very dissimilar parts, you still have all the ECU and sensore issues to overcome. Personally, a GM V8 to H55F is much safer territory, and the parts and expertise are available.

Let's assume the ECU/sensor buisness was already taken care of (if I was going to do it, it would be with a stand-along ECU and one of the earlier engines, the one without VVTI). Plus, I really like this particular engine, both from an engineering and availability standpoint. Plus there's the added bonus of keeping it Toyota from soup to nuts.

I'm wondering, though, what makes them so dissimilar? It's not like I'm trying to mount the H55 to a normally transverse engine. Is there something fundamental about their design or alignment that would make connecting them difficult?

Adaptor, flywheel, shaft adption, etc. I am not familiar enough with the Toyota V8s to tell you all the details. The FZJ and 1HD-T / 1HD-FE engines are also dissimilar to the engines that were designed to operate with the H41/42 and H55 transmissions.

Sheldon and Greg at G&S recently mated an H55F and late model split case to a 1HD-T turbodiesel using an HJ (?) Bell housing and Isuzu clutch system. I am not aware of any such transitional solution or adaptors for mating the H55 to later gas engines. But all things are possible, given ingenuity and money.

You might be luckier with a newer Toyota 5-speed instead, like the one used on the 105 outside of the US. Non-US 100 Series receive both the V8 and the 1FZ-FE, the latter available with the 5-speed. I believe the V8 is only available with the automatic.

The H55 is a truck transmission.
The U series is a passenger engine.

Wasn't the old cast iron H55 discontinued some years ago, and replaced w/ a modern aluminum R151?

So maybe the R151 would be a better choice behind a modern U series engine.
