Making good progress, Tony! You can cut out all the backing plate except for a little circle at the center that acts as a spacer. Weld the portion of the dust shield that attaches to the bracket that holds the brake line to keep that on the spacer, too. Did it on Snoop and it worked out well. I'll send a pic if you need a better description. Kinda hard to explain :-/

Anyone know what size line I would need if I cut down the dust shield and just got one long braided line to replace the rubber brake hose and the short hard line?

If you want to go directly from the hard line on the axle to the caliper with no backing plate in place, napa part #38881 is what you're looking for. If you find that hose to be too long, part #38878 is the shorter version.

Any advice on getting this top arm off?

Been doing that for an hour. Tried hammering at them with a chisel and still no luck

Brass drift on top of the stud and give it a few whacks ... Hard. The cone washer will eventually pop loose. Then take a small flat screwdriver and wedge it in the split on the cone washer and lift it off. Once you have all the cone washers off you still have a fight on your hands. Hit the side if the arm with a hammer (brass if you have one) while you lift on the arm. Keep the shims with the arm/cap and go back the same way.

I finally got 3 to come out. I can't find my brass drift and no one around seems to know what the hell a brass drift is. It seems to be a tool of the past.

Finally got them all out by just hitting the side and working them with a dull chisel. Just took about an hour to finally work them all up

Yeah I just 5 lbs hammered it. Left the nuts on the studs in case missed. Just took forever

Getting late so I put the bang bang tools away. Neighbors and stuff. I will work on the arm and the other side tomorrow.

Drivers side caliper is rusted in place but the passenger side is good to go. I just cut the rubber line because it is getting replaced and it didn't want to come off nicely.

Harbor freight has a brass drift set for like $20. Get one. A must have tool in my tool kit. Pick up a brass hammer at the same time. Trust me, much easier.

Yeah I had a brass rod that I found and used it as a drift for years. Just misplaced it while moving to the new house along with my C clip pliers. I found a large brass hammer on Amazon and ordered it along with a few sizes of brass punches.

Both balls are knuckle free. I've never wanted a parts washer more than I do right now.

Both knuckles on and new to me front shocks.

In your opinion, should I try to fix the rusted up caliper and keep it for a spare or should I jus trade it it for the $50 core?
