My car’s 1HZ makes white smoke come out of exhaust on cranking but once it starts up and running, the white smoke disappears. What does white smoke on start up indicate?
When running on the road there is no white or black smoke coming out of exhaust, even when I drive it hard.
Thanks!

Glow plugs!

yes check the glow system but how much smoke? Is this something new that just started happening? If you don't have ACSD you may have a small amount especially if your injector nozzles aren't in great shape. not using any coolant right?

No coolant isn't burning, glow plugs are brand new and genuine Denso, but I don't know the age of injectors and have no knowledge when those were replaced or serviced ever since I bought the car. The engine is in tip-top shape. I don't think it has ACSD. Here is the picture of injection pump. One thing I noticed is that the injection pump makes a ticking sound between 70 kph and 80 kph, but once I go above 80 kph the sound disappears. I am not sure if that is the sound from injection pump or injectors.

I don't know when it started, and the smoke isn't very much. I noticed it because I was standing behind the exhaust pipe and I had another guy start the engine. I noticed light white smoke upon cranking and disappeared immediately after engine started.

What was the ambient temperature? How long do you let the system glow after the light goes off? Battery age?

If the glows are new, you could also do the usual elec checks of grounds, bus bar, etc. to ensure the new glows are getting the best chance to heat up.

If smoke lasted for a few minutes I might be looking for air getting into the system but it sounds like your smoke clears almost instantly after startup?

Around 18 degrees Celsius. White smoke isn't very prominent to notice as a driver, unless you're standing right in front of the exhaust pipe, smoke is very light white smoke and immediately clears up as soon the engine starts. No head gasket leak or loss of coolant. When the engine gets cold, it takes couple of cranks to start. But once the engine heats up, then it has no problem starting.
Speaking of bus bar, I will check if the glow plugs are getting electricity. Older glow plugs had a little bit of white oxidation type particles built up on it. Not sure, it was due to water intrusion or something else. Because I do wash the engine whenever I wash the car.

This type of white residue on glow plug. Picture is for reference and not my own. I read on the other forum and someone wrote that this is oxidation, which is normal.

Normal if the engine is cold.

Does it fire up straight away?

Without glow, it hesitates to start on first crank, but on second crank with glow, it starts immediately. Yes, light white smokes comes out of tail pipe on cold start.

White smoke is unburnt diesel so not out of the ordinary when starting.

There is a temperature sensor which cuts your glow system.
You could try a double glow.
My HZJ75 does the exact same thing.
On my BJ74 I disconnect the sensor in order to glow at my choosing.

A single long glow (past when the light goes out) first thing in the morning allows my 1hz to start with no stumbling and almost zero smoke. I wait for the second click which happens about 3 to 5 seconds after the light goes out (depending on temperature).

Even at -30°C I don't need to glow a second time. But the glow duration seemed to be the key...

I have seen 1hz starting on half crank without glow, but they blow smoke. When I start mine, it idles slow for a couple of seconds and then pickups speed and starts idling normal.
I don't really want to replace injectors because injectors are expensive, I should try snake oil first and see if that makes any difference. I have an aftermarket Alibaba injection timing SST for 1hz/1pz/1hdt but haven't tried to test it because I am afraid that I might mess up the timing, right now my car isn't blowing any black smoke.

Not sure why one would want to start cold with no glow. The smoke isn't really necessary...

This is how I want it to start. One more question, my car doesn’t have two batteries setup from factory. Is it necessary to have two batteries for 1HZ. Maybe dual can help start it fast.

old injectors can sometimes make funny sounds at certain speeds, I doubt its the pump. too much of a closeup to see if it has ASCD. check if your getting power to the bus bar.

This is the part number for the injection pump that is installed in my car. 221001C380
Looking at the picture, from the top round thing that is called high altitude compensator below that assembly is called ASCD? These are the exact pictures of 221001C380 downloaded from partsouq. The 1HZ in my car is the second gen 1HZ, not the one that came in 80 series.
