Pete, can you give us a description of the noise. I still have a faint ticking in the 1800-2100 rpm range.
Ive snapped off a bolt in the timing case,so when I get the energy to strip it down I may check the pump

Well, I thought was a really noisy valve until I got under the engine and realized it was coming from down low. It's more of a tap than a tick.

Incidentally, the whole timing case needs to be pulled to check the pump - not just the cover. The oil pump is located on the backside of the case and resides in the block.

Was it consistent, would it come and go, or RPM related (worst at idle/low rpm=lower oil pressure and not be heard at high RPM etc).

Thanks Peter.

It was consistent through the rev range. The increasing noise from a faster running engine and a leaky braided exhaust pipe would drown it out at higher RPM's but it was still discernable. I had Ciaran and Rob listen to it and while feeling it wasn't normal, they couldn't pinpoint it. Actually I think Rob may have suggested it could be the oil pump. I doubted it because I had done all of Toyota's spec measurements on it when I assembled and it checked out. As a last ditch effort I pulled the whole timing case and was relieved to find the problem. Previously, I did have a few tech's tell me not to worry about it and just drive it- I'm glad I didn't listen to them.

This is not meant to scare anyone as I'm sure most of the 1H engines that are making "ticking" noises will last a lifetime and do not have this issue.

I am putting another 1hZ engine in my truck next spring - then I am rebuilding the one I take out - will be interesting to see what I find. It has about 500- hours on it, 4200 at full throttle in 4wd low 3rd gear max, then I put the turbo on it and have been bagging the s*** out of it ever since. Something tells me it is going to be fine though - I have 580-600 psi in each cylinder.

I'll post pics of the rebuild and all the coatings and fun stuff I'm going to do to it.

Uhh exactly what problem did you find when you pulled the timing case? Exactly what was making the clicking noise?

QUOTE=mac;4623614]I know this is an old post but i just stumbled across it. I had a nagging noise from my 1HD-T that I couldn't rectify through valve adjustments, etc. It turned out to be an oil pump gear wandering back and forth on the shaft and striking the timing cover. Toyota doesn't give a spec for end play on the oil pump gear, only lateral play so I never measured it when I put the engine together. Caused me a ton of frustration and time.[/QUOTE]

Got it. So what was the fix exactly? I am not familiar with the oil pump gear. For example did you put spacers along the shaft to keep the gear from wandering and striking the timing cover?
Thanks

No, the timing case/pump is not a serviceable item. The case and pump come as an assy. I replaced it.

Cheers,

Sounds like its a different noise to mine

Yes ,I would probably have to pull that inside part of the casing off to get the bolt out anyway. Maybe I can drill it in situ:meh:
