Howdy
just thought i would ask, the 1HZ in my 97 troopy runs quite cool, takes a while to get the needle to move up off the bottom of the temp gauge and when it does it only moves up about 2 or 3 needle thicknesses (is that a word??)
I kno she is running cool as the heater (new core) takes ages to pump through some warm air (and its cold here in sunny perth at the moment!)
Am thinking maybe the thermostat jammed open?? (or maybe even has been removed by prev owner?)
is this bad (for it to run cool) and besides the thermostat i cant think of anything else that would cause that bu open to ideas!

I would start there and that is likely your problem.

I don't think its good for them to run that cool either, not as efficient and likely more wear on the motor as they are designed to operate at an optimal temp.

Cheers!

Was it always like this? The factory gauge is fairly ordinary when it comes to fault diagnosis.

The easiest way to test the T/Stat without removal is to start it up cold and feel the lower hose and let it idle.
After about 5 mins the t/stat should open and you will feel a definate change of temperature in the hose.
Its advisable to remove the fan belt.

I had one of these Engine watchdogs on my 75 ute and will be buying one for my troopie.
You just attach the sensor to the bolt on the coolant outlet near the head and either plug it into the cig lighter or wire it to the fuse box for power.
It gives you a fairly accurate idea of the coolant temp as it leaves the head and will alert you with an alarm if it reaches the preset temperature of your choice
It fits well under the ashtray of a 70 series

Worked faultlessly for the last 3 years.

Nice one Rosco -i was looking at those a while back and wondered if they were anygood -thks for the heads up

the car is an ex "work" vehicle of a family friend - so the history is somewhat checkered! - ie its been driven by people who dont give a rats about it -
cheers

What is a good coolant temp range for the 1hz?
I am thinking about installing one of those.

Its actually quite interesting watching it go up and down and then you realise how inadequate the factory gauge is.

On a really steep, long descent the coolant can drop to as low as 55-60c,on long uphills at 80 kph it can climb to 120c.
It could probably go higher if you kept flooring it,but I have my alarm set at 110c.

In our winter at 15-20c its usually on 75c in traffic,in summer around 85-90c with the aircon on in 30c+
So under normal driving the 1HZ is about 50-60c warmer than the ambient temperature.

I would like to have 2 of them, one on the outlet and one on the inlet and see how much the radiator is cooling the coolant.

Im also interested in this one from the US,its $20 cheaper and does more. I thought it would look good on top of the reserve tank fuel gauge pod.
The link had a video of it working.
