Hey Folks,

I am working on doing an engine swap on my 64 fj-40. I want to swap a 1hz w/ after market turbo, h55 5spd w/ a split transfer. What will I need? Has any one done one of these before? This wont be a cheap project, but I think it will be worth it. I plan on running it on bio. Also, the engine I am getting has about 150,000 miles on it. What will I need to replace? Thanks for any tips.

Hi Guenther The engine should be ok if its been looked after.

Power steering pump gets a groove in the shaft and the vanes usually have wear about that mileage.
Its not too dear for parts
I would also do the rear main seal and use only an OEM

They also have a welch plug behind the flywheel. Its a good time to do that as well.

If your fitting a new clutch, having the flywheel machined (not ground) will improve the clutch feel.
Also the timing belt, idler cam and tension spring.

After speaking to several aussie engine rebuilders ,wreckers and fuel injection shops ,they are all unaminous that the 1HZ will blow a head gasket if overheated, although its not a weak point if the cooling system is working correctly.

The other main item is the fuel pump . They have a history in Australia of not lasting as long as the 4cyl rotary and inline pumps.
Although plenty of them do 3-400000 klm they have a higher rate of failure.
The piston and head dont like low sulpher diesel so the bio diesel may cure this:cool:

Beanz2 knows about this swap and Im sure he can fill you in on the installation:D

Keep us up tp date with some pics:D

I have a little write up on my site for my 1HZ-HJ60 swap. It may give you some more info.

1HZ -> HJ60

keep in mind most 1HZs you will find will be 24v as well.

Congrats dude .. awesome job .. ! ( and documentation )

I have delete all my pics due to space.

If you need pics I will forward to your email if you PM me.

Lottsa room for that bad boy, all I would say is tack in the mounts then fit install the rad and fit the fan.

In retro spec the engine was placed lower in the front to accomidate exttreme drive line angles. I would forgo this and raise the engine a couple inches to accomidate the fan.
