We are way behind with the 1982 FJ40 from New York but its finally done (140 hours into the body after welding and it looks real sweet).

Anyways looking for all your professional input.

Hoping to turn this around in record time as we have another truck needing to be finsihed ASAP.
'
So far its looking real good, we are pulling the body off the mustard cruiser on our web page and changing it back to Tan(the original colour LOL).

Anyhow we are only two days into the project and things are going great, body almost completely dissassembled, most parts in the paint booth today.

We are looking for ideas on Starting and charging system. We have thought about the 24 volt start and the 12 volt run system, we would only need a 12volts start (Hint Hint Beanz just joking) Prolly buy a new starter from Enz as suggested by Sheldon.

Power steering, go with 60 series box or try and fit the engine with the mini truck PS box and booty fabbed mount. The box is much smaller than the original manuel unit and it may fit?

Were gonna use a manual switch for the glow plugs with a timer, we even had thought about keying into the ignition and having a light on the dash? I like the old BJ40s with the little element in dash that glows red showing you when the plugs are ready, that was a way cool and simple system.

Fuel tank, thinking maybe under the bed were the muffler is and running the filler neck through the tub at the back and under to keep a factorylook. The exhaust will come out the other side and will have to think a little on that.

Kinda sad but the factory seats which were repholstered will be pulled along with the sandblasted seat frames in order to install buckets. We are going to bend up some tube and make our own brackets. Thinking Toyota Celica? Supra? Honda Prelude? just not sure but I know they must be a very thin base so that puts the Supra seats out of the running.

Not very tech but I found a square Bezel and square steering wheel that would look kinda trick in this rig? Just pop on a Diesel emblem on the grill and we would have some people scratching thier heads.

I will post more tomorrow as I am beat from sanding panels all day.

Thanks in advance........

Rob, for the price of shipping that starter from Oz, you might as well as get one from Ens, LOL. From what guys on the DTLC list are saying, you can get a rebuilt 2L or 2LT starter, transplant the electric motor to the 1HZ starter nose and, Voíla, 12V 1HZ starter!

Darn, it looks like you are gonna finish that HZJ45 before I finish my HZJ40 :)

Dave

Thanks for kind words guys........

You gotta remember this is not my hobby and I am under the gun to finish these projects. Some days its dream come true and most other days its just like on the TV showsn and you are scrambling to get this part or that to finish it in time.

I love the challenge although I must admit it has not been a easy road, lots of days I just want to throw in to towel and go back to a 9 to 5 job.

Thankfully my wife has been very supportive and I hope to stop dippin into the RRSPs soon and the bizzz will hold its own.

Never as glamorious as most think, myself included.

Now give me some ideas..............

Cheers.

Monster Garage or American Choppers? :D Can't give you much ideas, because like my smiley face, I'm fairly green. I can certainly compliment you on the nice work so far, though...

OK, more ideas:

Glow plug timers can be had in the aftermarket, but if you are working under a deadline the manual switch would save time:

Why not keep the fuel tank in stock location? Factory parts save time. Mid 80's Supra seats that I have had have thin lower portions suitable for mounting above the tank.

Square steering wheel? Kinda kinky! :) But consider newer pre airbag 80 series or 4Runner steering wheel. The rims are pretty nice and fat, the leather versions are even nicer: http://www.birfield.com/postt53.html

Thanks Dave, just what I am looking for.

Have any ideas on the start run system?

Can I save money and keep the entire 24 volts system and runn a converter to run the lights, heater etc?

I am new to this but have asked the same questions about the 24/12 volt for a project I am about to start. Talking to Sheldon and Marv and reading other posts about this subject changing the 24 volt parts out to 12 volt will be the safiest way to go. I hear that the 24&12 volt system will work but to many bugs to play with and since you do not have the time to sort things out and I am sure you do not want a return to haunt you consider removeing the 24. I hope this can be of some help to you. Brian

The 80 12/24 system seems quite complicated with voltage switching solenoids, etc., and some 12/24 parts may be 80 specific like the ignition. I can't tell for sure, someone else has my 80 manuals.

I agree with 82-40, I'd try to keep it all 12V or all 24V for simplicity's sake. This is a 70 series engine, right? You got 24V starter, alternator, shut off solenoid and glows. It's probably way cheaper to run Greg_B's 24 to 12 "solar" converter than to find 24V heater blower, wiper, windshield washer, radio and light bulbs.

Dave

By chance I have the solenoid for a 80 series, I am buying a 80 series manual from Ozz and will have a better idea of the wiring.

I think the 24 start and 12 volt run will be very simple once I have some schematics in front of me.

So right now I am teetering on Solar converters, but would prefer to run the other system for its design and the principal behind it.

All I would have to do is change out the alternator to 12 volt and I think they are not that expensive for the landcruiser units without vacume pumps?

Rob

The 27060-17040 12V 100A alternator is available in US by special order. What's US$620 (retail) when you have such a big project? :)
12V starter is non US (Ens?)
12V glows are US$28 each.

Dave

Thats true Dave, in the scope of a project like this its not going to bust the budget and it sure keeps things simple.

I am pretty sure Enz will give us great pricing as they have been great to deal with.

Two days later...........

Is the second pic a bracket for a PTO.

We have one coming and need to build a front bumper to accomidate one.

Man, that is a clean engine ... Is that from G&S?

Yes Sir, Sheldon arranged the shipping and its here.

Those boys put out some damn good product I tell ya and they are some darn nice guys to boot.

Now if I could only get out of the paint booth and start doing some asembly, looking forward to hooking up the PTO and fitting the engine.

We are getting the shop at the end of the month and expect to be working on TBs HZJ which is long over due, we hope to put it in high gear and complete two projects.

Don't they though? :D

The 1HZ was actually a lot easier to wire than I thought. You can track down 12V plugs, and a starter as mentioned, I am sure aftermarket 12V alternators are available, and the fuel cut off solenoid does function on 12V but there is a small delay.

Sweet project! keep us posted!

Awww.. com on you guys are making me blush

A lot of hard work goes into getting good engines, testing em, cleaning em and shipping em.. it is nice to know it is appreciated

Thanks Rob, Gehn..

Sheldon

Okay, well its looking better than I originally though.......

Jobs to complete

-build engins mounts and transfercase mount
-fabricate new transfercase shifter assembly
-mount body

Pictures are clearance from Mini truck PS box, Seal from manual transfercase which fits ??? and last you cannot appreciate the wet sanding between coats on the paint job due to crappy camera.
