Nice to know there is some agreement that I am not totally full of scheize ALL of the time...

Jeff- did you notice your EGT?

EGT's? Nope, I'm oblivious. But it's on the to do list.

FWIW, Andrew (from VI Cruisers) and I were pushing things fairly hard up the Coq last summer on our way to Whipsaw. He has a pyro and wasn't concerned, so with that hill and the summer heat at that time, I am most definetly not.

I'l get some gauges in before Moab hopefully, and post up some Contour HD vids of me ripping around town breaking speeding laws. What was Lances youtube password again?

If you are getting that good performance without a re-gear on 35s i'd call it pretty fine!

Oh jeeeez. Well, guess I'm going to have to get one of these too. Already have an intercooler, pyro and boost gauge so might as well go for broke. To redo the turbo or not.....

Graham's truck already had the power rod in his truck, it came like that from Japan, but it was installed incorrectly by PO, so that's why John had a bitch of a time to tune it to factory settings to help improve power without the smoke, on Graham's truck before. When John went to put the mod in Graham's truck, he noticed he already had it, but with a bit more aggressive delivery on the one from Japan, than theirs.

Any tell-tale sign that one had already been installed by the PO? When I got my truck the black smoke POURED out the back. It also had a bunch of blingy modifications that make me wonder.

I am trying to wrack my memory, but I don't recall having the idle smoke issue when I first got the truck. Only black smoke on accel.

no- I tried the LCOOL pump tuning instructions but that only made matters worse. I had no idea the truck had a different aneroid rod but it had a lot of power and a lot of smoke. I had no pyro at this time and shudder to think of the temps it was reaching.

Same situation I had... lots of power, lots of smoke. John at Radd took it for a test drive and couldn't believe the power it had. I then turned down the fuel screw to reduce the black smoke.

Now that I have a pyro, I think I'll try turning it back up a bit and see what happens. Will post back results here :)

Thank god your truck is perfectly tuned, my lungs n the early took a beating with all those slow drive by hellos that turned into something else lol

So I had my first run up 'the cut' in North Van this afternoon.

90 kph (NOT recalcuated for the 315's), 2000 rpm, boost at 1 bar, foot just resting on the right pedal. Didn't even notice that I was going up a hill.

Urban Dictionary: raped ape

That sounds good :) I can't wait to get my truck back and test it out!

Hey Ryan,

How's the 81 running now?

ATEB says it's good :) Still waiting for the gauge to arrive though. It'll be next week before I pick up the truck. I'm anxiously, but patiently waiting...

When I got my truck I could spin the inside front tire (35" swamper) around corners and rolled coal on acceleration. I installed an egt guage and found I could hit 1500 degrees on a flat straight away. I turned down the fuel until egts were acceptable and now live with lack luster performance especially on hills although I did start getting an extra 100km per tank.
The mod and tuning sound cool but already having spent too much on my cruiser (my wife's opinion) my next question is how much did it cost?

The mod is kind of only one component. You kind of need exhaust and the gauges are a good idea too. For the price for the mod it would probably be best if you contact ATEB or another shop that knows what it is and get a quote from them.

Has anyone actually tracked their fuel economy (and driven normally) after having the mod done? The initial claim on improved fuel economy sounds like a bit of a guess. Has anyone actually tracked the numbers with a before and after? I definitely have lots of before data, so I'm looking forward to comparing my data after the mods have been done to see if there is any kind of notable difference.

I have the guages and exhaust, I'm just curious what you guys paid, you can send me a pm if you are uncomfortable saying on the internet.

Look at the first post, Sailor mentioned it in there.

I will have to get a pyro soon, and probably turn fuel down some. I had another trip to North Van, and really rolled it on going through the tunnel by the PNE. 120 and it was climbing quickly, with a huge cloud of smoke the entire length. I can only imagine the poor saps behind me being not to impressed. I kinda feel like when I first got my 350 powered 40 :)

That's kinda what I worry about with the power rod. What is the difference between that and simply turning up the fuel screw? The 5 speed HDJ I brought in for a friend had huge power and get-up-and-go but also huge smoke, and it was quickly obvious that the P.O. had simply turned up the fuel. I can get much better driveability on my auto by turning up the fuel but the downside is lower mileage and clouds o' smoke.

the rod re curves when and how the fuel is delivered based on boost. The total fuel screw you mention controls fuel quantity injected across the board. likely Jeff has a bit too much total fuel but there will always be a slight haze, shouldn't be the smokescreen achieved from simply turning up fuel.

I've had a few tweaks done along with the power rod modification. But it's just matter now of adjusting this 'n that, doing some road testing, and tuning a little more to get it all set up.

Hey thanks, I missed that.

15 psi, over fueling and no pyro, the ih8mud diesel gurus must be squirming right now.:D I think these engines are pretty tough, before I had my pyro, I rolled coal all the way to Merrit at 140km/h, cost me $80! and that was when fuel was cheaper! My pyro temps must have been a constant 1400 degrees! I've heard similar stories from others, and none have noticed any symptoms of damage. With the fuel turned down I drive pretty conservatively now going with the ih8mud majority's opinion of safe egts and appreciating the 19/20 mpg.

I've tweaked the off boost fuel screw a bit to get a little more fuel off the line, this improved the sluggish starts after turning the fuel down. I don't see how this mod would be any different at highway speeds than adjusting the main fuel screw as I'm at full boost at highway speeds. Not to mention I'm a cheap stubborn do it yourselfer.:hillbilly: I'm still running 10.5 psi boost which I'm tempted to turn up a bit and then play with the fuel again which may be where the advantage is.

I have some friends with dodge cummins and from watching their experiences I subscribe to the theory that the flame that burns twice as bright burns only half as long and I'm going for some longevity ;)

yes, I saw this a few years ago. Also the LCOOL one. I wasn't able to achieve satisfactory performance by following it...
