Actually there is nothing wrong with the full time 4wd, that the 80 series have. My FJ80 had the earlier version without the viscous coupling, and while you feel driveline slop, it was very smooth. And I am from the belief of use it or lose it, so while it may seem redundant to be turning all the metal up front it feels balanced and you know all the parts are getting regular use. I never had issues with my FJ80 full time 4wd.

Due to the torque transfer with the 80 series transfer case when the CDL is unlocked it actually works quite well on light trails where you would be not sure if you wanted 4wd or not. It steers way better having the torque transferred to the rear and so on when in a radius turn.

Never in my 10+ years on Mud have I started a thread with 40+ responses. It's been a great debate with a LOT of useful information; thank you!

I placed the deposit on the 1HD-T today so it appears that I'm committed. I visited my mechanics shop today (yeah, he's there on Sunday) and he had the service manual open on the transmissions. He's now giving this serious thought and I'm confident that the right decision will be made between the H55 and the transmission that's coming with the motor. Appreciate the referral to Marks Adapters as I'd like to keep the front from spinning.

Yeah Brown Bear, the 62 is pretty nice. It's definitely not THAT nice that I'll ever get my money back out of it but then I've had it 20+ years so it's not like I'm going to sell it anyway. Just a small spot of rust that needs to be addressed by the rear window but that's about it.

Will drive this rig to Patagonia someday and you can either join or follow along....it will happen.

Sounds fun. Now go read all the BEB threads, (big end bearings) and get the right parts in to get the engine all prepped for install. It's about the only consistent warning on here for these engines. Should not be a hard thing to do with the motor out.

BEB, and timing belt kit (belt, tensioner pulley and tension spring) are all cheap insurance, and all fatal for the engine if they fail.

you might have to source the tension spring separately. its a $14 part, and known to fail.

Thanks for this. My mechanic has already mentioned the beb and I'm sure we will cover the rest as well. I plan to go down for the viewing when the exchange takes place. This will be fun and I'll update as we go along. We don't have the engine yet...hopefully sometime in February.

Received a trail gear part time adapter from cruiser outfitters to make the transfer case part time. We will replace the timing components, water pump, check the bearings and remove/test injectors prior to engine placement.

Any other tips/advice welcome.....

Update:

1HDT is in the states and should arrive in Portland end of next week (4/7).

Coming out of a '92 80 series with ~230 kilometers on the dial. Planning to use the H151 trans.

I was at Josh's shop a week or so ago to have him look at the new troopy and he was out test driving a just finished diesel conversion on a brown 60 series... I was thinking it was yours but then heard that the guy came up from california to have josh do it. Can't wait to see yours all done! Im sure you can't either.

For some insurance on your fuel pump I'd be removing the cold start device (if it hasn't been already) and put a straight cover on it or grind the ball off it. Yes you lose the extra advance at idle when cold but it's such a common fault for it to drop off and destroy the internals of your fuel pump.

Noted Antony and I appreciate the input.

Good advice, x2 on ditching the ACSD. The direct injection diesels are easy to start in my experience, and I didn't notice any difference in starting when I removed mine.

I've certainly noticed rougher running on COLD starts (-15 to -35C) for the first 5 seconds or so, but I've added a Webasto so starting a cold engine in those conditions isn't something that happens often. In a warmer climate I see no reason not to ditch the ACSD.

A delay. Now looking at a 4/14 delivery.

Bringing this back to life. Been sitting on the 1HDT until I decided which way to go. I have bought a Troopy and the 1HDT will be going in next month.

I will have a low mileage 3bii with it's H55 transmission for sale.

I just read all the entire Thread, you will love the 1HDT. In my opinion, in therms of reliability and power is one of the best engines ever made (or the best).
Take good care of it and that engine will take you to the moon.
Its expensive? YES IT IS, but its worth it all the way.

I am currently modding mine, I already mounted an aftermarked CT26 and modified a little bit the pump and now I am thinking about an intercooler and many things more. It is really a good toy for adults.

You will be selling your 3FE with H55 on combo or separately?

Been sitting on the 1HDT until I decided which way to go

I would pull the injection pump off and get it tested and the injectors flow matched. Check the flywheel and clutch, so much easier to do out of the car.

Hi Rosco. Thanks for the comment. The injectors and pump are already being checked. New water pump installed. Starter and alternator sent to the shop for work through. Cold start removed. Looking for a flywheel right now. BEB's , timing belt, tensioner replaced.

Mauricio, the 3FE and H55 are staying put in the FJ62. I will be putting the 1HDT into a BJ75. I will be selling the 3b and H55 that is currently in that truck.

Cleaning up nicely.
