my injection pump is leaking on my 92. In going through the forum, it seems the best/only option is a rebuild.

My mechanic specializes in LC and told me that it would take about 4-6 weeks to get the parts, rebuild, reinstall. He quoted me around $3,200 in total (parts, labor). thoughts on the timing and price?

Also, does anyone know if there is a place that might be able to source the parts faster? I am suppose to move cross country by the end of January and that might be a sticking point if my vehcile isn't done.

Thanks in advance. I'm not very well versed in Diesels so bear with me!

I am in Arizona and ship my pump/injectors to Canada FYI

I think @yotahed is the right mud member (jon in canada,).
Also diesel fuel injection in Portland is a mud favorite. Should be 1/2 that $3200 number. If nothing blown up.

How many km does your engine have?
If it’s under 200k,you can get away with a reseal, there’s only a few rubber seals n o rings to change, the seal kit you can get from any diesel shop for the rotary nippondenso pump,$100?
And few hrs for someone who’s familiar with the pump.
Take a look at where it’s leaking from, top cover seal, throttle lever O ring are the common one.

Thanks all I’m in Los Angeles now. K&H Imports Land Cruiser currently has my truck.

I don’t know the KMs off hand -but it’s somewhere around 115K. I had Cruiser tech in Laguna hills do my BEBs and they took a good look at the engine and it’s golden, so they do think the mileage is close to accurate (I know the imports can be shady sometimes).

Is just replacing the seals a bandaid to the issue? It is leaking from the top. Since I’m driving cross country with her early next year, I don’t want to have to get to the east coast (Philly) and research another reliable LC shop

Fair to mention K&H quoted me $900 for the labor and $2300 for the parts and rebuild. They said that there was cheaper shop they use to use but they closed and really haven’t found anyone else. they are open to any recommendations for the parts and rebuild so i appreciate your help here!

$2300 for parts must be assuming that something in the pump is worn out and needs replacing. But this is a diagnosis that can only be made by dimantling and inspecting the pump, or if it is inoperative.

Leaking rubber seals/O-rings are common as these pumps age. The leak is not in any way indicative of wear in the pump internals.

To replace the rubber seals requires at least partial dis-assembly of the pump. Doing it by the book, the pump should be re-calibrated by a diesel specialist after rebuilding.

The rubber seals most likely to leak include the seal where the governor (accelerator) crank goes through the top cover of the pump, the seal for the top cover of the pump against the body, and the seals in the ACSD (cold start advance). You can change all of these without removing the pump from the vehicle and without having to recalibrate the pump.

Other common leaks are from the lower timer piston and the distributive head - these require the pump to be removed and in the case of the timer piston, recalibration (or carefully putting things back in exactly the position they were in, although this is not the 'correct' way to do it).

To change every seal in the pump, including the seal on the input shaft (which I have never head of leaking) is a full strip-down.

If you only change the seal that leaks, you may find that others start leaking soon after.

Seals are cheap - so $2300 must be including a new lift pump and/or head plus who knows what else, though you should ask you mechanic what it is he thinks needs replacing.... If you take it to a diesel specialist tey will inevitable fully strip down, inspect and recalibrate the pump with new seals, but there are no standard mechanical parts which need replacing just because the seals are leaking.
