I have RPM Garage doing some work for me currently, doing a PDI intercooler install, GTurbo G300, and 3in exhaust. I plan to run the stock airbox, or possibly get a torfab air box.

So the G300 should be preset at 18PSI of boost.

RPM isn't going to be doing much on the tuning side, will it be fine to leave it at 18PSI with no fuel adjustment or should I have them turn the boost down?

I have a fuel pin and cap coming from Trundles for tuning but not going to get that for a week or two.

What immediately will need to be changed after the turbo install?

I don't plan to push more than 20psi of boost to keep longevity and reliability.

Thank you for the wisdom.

Boost produced is heavily influenced by how much fuel is being burnt.

If you leave the fuel settings as is, and end up running 18psi you may end up with lean AFR mixture.
This means cooler combustion temperatures, lower EGTs. It's a safe option.
Depending on the turbo, if there's not enough fuel, you may not achieve 18psi.

If the new turbo is more efficient than your previous turbo, you'll get a cleaner fuel burn, and less smoke.
You may not necessarily see more power, unless the existing tune is running a rich fuel heavy tune. Then the new turbo could help make better use of excess fuel.

You might find you need to adjust idle speed. May be just fine too.

Beyond that, you should be able to run with previous tune as is. Performance may not be optimal, but should still be ok to drive.

Who will be tuning it?
Do you have EGT & boost gauges?

Just the man I was hoping would comment.

I have yet to find a shop in socal to tune it. So I might as well finish reading all the documentation and tune it myself.

I have EGT, Boost, and AFR so everything I need for tuning is there.

I have the shop doing the install because I don't have the time for install, but they haven't dove too deep in to the diesel 80s yet.

By next week I should have the Trundles Fuel Pin and Cap.

Everything right now should be stock 1996 HDJ81.

I haven't done any tuning before but I'm mechanically inclined.

@mudgudgeon

Just want to see if you have any opinions on running the stock airbox on 18psi of boost. Also planning to do a snorkel, safari style.

Or any other modifications I should do?

I think the stock airbox will be fine at 18psi, they become restrictive above mid 20s psi.

If you don't already have a 3" exhaust system, get one. This is the single biggest improvement after adding turbo, or tuning for more power.

Snorkel isn't going to help perfomance and can be a restriction, unless you go big, 3 or 4" pipe.
It will help a bit by bringing in cooler air.

Gauges, sounds like you're already sorted.

Tuning can be frustrating. Can be fun as well.

It's a bit of a black art, and takes a while to grasp how each adjustment affects overall tune, and how the adjustments interact.
Try to get into the habit of only changing one thing at a time when possible.

Test drive, tweak, repeat.

Get a 4 inch steel snorkel by Moonlight or someone similar. And forward facing.

I know on my diesel it was not recommended to use the stock airbox. I like the PDI airbox.

Great points 👆 I'd follow all of them
