Hi all.

It's worse than I thought. My intake runners and cylinder head are completely full of oily EGR soot.

The truck ran fine (but felt sluggish off boost) before I started peeling back all the layers of this dirty onion.

Looking into my options right now. Things are complicated by the fact that I may have to move back to the US within a couple months. I don't want to half ass the repair, but if the truck is not running, I can't ship it.

Anyone deal with an EGR gunked up FT or FTE? Were you able to get by with walnut blasting? Or just pull the head?

Button it up and deal with it when you're back in US if you're worried about the time frames.
You said it's been running just fine. Leave it as is a little longer.
I recently had to cram a bunch of mechanical repairs in before an international move so i could ship my cruiser. It adds a lot of pressure to an already tedious process.

That amount of gunk, i think it would be worth the effort to remove the head.
Check valves and replace valve stem seals while the head is off

Seems like these motors get the EGR gunk worse them most. The intake tract in the head is so long the only way you can get it 100% clean is to pull the head but you can get about half of it out with wire tube brushes and solvent. Not a fun job. For the intake manifold and crossover pipe I like to burn it all out and then follow up with ultrasonic. A low dose of water meth injection will keep everything clean going forward.

Thanks for the advice guys. Bought a walnut blaster for the head and dropping the removed parts off at a shop for cleaning.

Might try to scrub the ports manually though as the blaster will take a few weeks

I had a nissan like that. I ended up soaking the manifold then scraping it out. For the head ports I scraped it out.

Really tacky horrible stuff. I'm sure something dissolves it but you don't want to dissolve it in the head.
