So, as I move closer to starting this head job, the issue of fuel injectors (replacing or testing/rebuilding), their connectors (potentially/likely cracking during disassembly), etc is a consideration in order to organize parts and such. Some folks recommend replacing the injectors, others say just get them tested and cleaned somewhere like at Mr Injector or Witchhunt.

Any local-ish (ie north SD county injector service shops?

Anyone ever tried out the Fuel Injector Upgrade kit offered by Cruiser Parts?

Any thoughts / experience / suggestions on the matter?

When I was looking into injectors it seemed most had them serviced which comes with a report on fuel distribution and usually new seals. The connector are another story, since it is likely they may break given age and heat transfer etc. While your there it may be wise to just replace the connectors if available and serviceable. Also don't forget the vacuum hose and coolant hoses under the intake, you may also want to replace fuel filter, vsv and pesky heater hose while there. It would also be a good time to clean the throttle body and egr ports while the intake is off. Also consider all new vacuum & EGR lines, throttle cable, transmission kick down cable, spark plug grommets, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor air intake boot, pvc valve etc. Don't forget to get all the intake gaskets for throttle body exhaust etc. I have not heard of any reports on the bosch injectors but in my experience oem for these types of parts is usually better especially if they have lasted this long. I learned the hard way that non oem cat sensors did not work, and had to be replaced with oem.

So there is a local-ish place for injector cleaning and testing in Temecula... Similar pricing as other places and includes free return shipping, and faster turn around time of only 1-2 days.

They also sell some 'upgrade' 12 hole Denso injectors for a little less than the the Bosch injectors offered by Cruiser Parts, but from watching a video that included a dyno test comparing 4 and 12 hole injectors there was no real difference.

Sounds like Upgrade may just Downgrade ones wallet.

Well at $200ish for a set of 6 injectors, compared to Toyota's stock 1FZ-FE injector (Denso 23209-74080) at a cost of nearly $200 for one, the upgrade sounds like a bargain. I still think the smart money is just spending the $18 a piece to get them cleaned and tested and only consider replacement of one or more if there are failures detected.

Seeing that picture of the injector test machine reminded me about talking with witch hunter (Gordon) at his house. He used to be a broadcast engineer for one of the big local TV stations in Seattle and had gotten into Subaru's after retirement. He got his hands on a used injector machine and started testing out injectors. The more he used this specific machine the more he realized it had a bunch of flaws in the design. He ended up writing the company and telling them about the flaws and sent them some basic schematics. They ended up writing him back and asking to hire him on as a consultant. He helped them get out a new model and I believe they gave him one for free when all was said and done. I can't remember the name of the company but it was in Europe.
