Getting parts and reading up about changing the timing belt on a 1999 ToyoAce fire truck.

Anybody had experience with one of these and have some pointers?

Get a factory manual. 2L, 3L, 5L are all the same procedure.

I've read through the manuals a couple of times. Any recommendations for specialty tools instead of the Toyota ones? Especially for the tight space?

Which special tools are you asking about?

If you want people to give you information, you could make a little effort in describing in at least basic detail what you are referring to. I can't recall needing anything other than standard tools to change a timing belt, though in a cab-over design that may be different.

Solid point although I didn't realize it was like tacomaworld.com here.

At least one of the SST tools by image description looks to be long enough to hit the radiator. I've seen a video of someone yanking the radiator and have also received advice that it could stay with a thin piece of plywood protecting the fins.

None of the SST tools look that proprietary but I also have limited information about this engine in this engine bay. Anything I have found thus far is in a full engine bay accessed with a hood, not through the front passenger seat of the cab.

My understanding is that there are plenty of these trucks in a similar capacity in use around the world. I just cannot seem to narrow down a good video or someone with some hands-on advice.

Also, Toyota service manuals are not always the most efficient. I've done plenty of work that did not require a full tear down of something just to replace something else saving several hours on unnecessary work.

Picture of said tools attached.

That first tool holds the crankshaft pulley so you can release the bolt. The second tool is a puller to remove the pulley. As you mention, they sometimes go a bit overboard on the process. In my experience Toyota crank pulleys can always be removed by hand.

I don't have this SST to hold the pulley on any of my engines, you can use an impact if you have access, or get a breaker bar on the bolt against a chassis rail, then blip the starter. I've also just drilled a long piece of angle iron, bolted that to the crank pulley and manually tightened the bolt. while the angle 'tool' is hard against the ground.

There is a Toyota Dyna (=ToyoAce) FB group where you might get more specific detail regarding radiator clearance, but I would guess you can get a breaker bar on there with the radiator in situ. If you can't free the bolt then time to drop the radiator and get an impact on it.
