Hello Beau its been a while-- hope you are well.

Understand the points you make. Could I find another 90 series in my price range as good as the one that started this whole thread, I would buy it. The 90 I looked at had a place for the second battery but neither the tray nor the wiring loom were installed.

I would prefer a newer 70 or barring that another 90 but unfortunately prices here get comparatively more expensive very rapidly. The other 90 that I drove here was a year older, more expensive and was a conversion from a right hand to left hand drive and was really poorly done. I am still deciding and looking so nothing is final yet. Thanks for the great info you have provided on the 90 series for me since I started this adventure. We will see how it goes.

Wonder how many MPG for a mule

Also thanks for your response and interest in the thread.... I agree an AC would be great but all of these things are hard to achieve given my price range and the restrictions on vehicles here.

Final note on Peruvian vehicles. I can travel with the vehicle anywhere pretty much in South America. However its pretty much impossible to import the vehicle to another country should I decide I want to live there. Additionally when time to sell, the only alternative is to bring the vehicle to Peru to sell it. Selling it in another country many times due to their restrictions on importation of used vehicles will bring a 100% duty on the vehicle when selling. From my limited understanding of importation laws should I decide to move back to the USA then I might be able to import a vehicle if it is over 25 years old. It can be damn complicated believe me.

Had not found this one. Thanks very much for the listing. Am going to telephone this guy when I am finished posting. Since my last posting ran in to another guy at a coffee shop with an SWB series 60. His is not for sale but he has a friend with a series 60 he wants to sell. Supposed to have the information later today or tomorrow.

So maybe the mule can wait . Will post as soon as I know more.

Edit-- now I know more. The ad for the 60 you provided the link to is an old ad (thanks very much no worries its appreciated!!!!). The phone number to the ad is the same guy has the 70 series that I am looking at for sale now. This was his last truck and he hasnt removed the ad from Vende.pe. Again thanks very much for the link and no worries its outdated.

More as it happens.

What sort of price do 90 series land cruisers go over there for? Here in the UK you can pick up a 1996 model land cruiser for about £2500 (cheapest) which is about $4500. I'm guessing they are rare vehicles over there, are the 80 series more popular?

Beau

The 90 is not that rare here in Peru. However they are expensive. You will pay anywhere from $10,000- $15,000 US dollars for one of the vintage I have been looking for. The one I almost purchased was in fair to good condition, had as I recall, around 138,000 km on it, did not look from what I could see on the underside, a history of having been used hard off road. They wanted $9900 for it and would not budge on the price. I have seen almost no 80's here. There are a few more modern 70's --i.e. late 1990-early 2000's in Ecuador and a bunch of them in Colombia. I have been tempted to go to Colombia and buy one of the 70's and bring here. Trouble with that is that 1) it is for all intents impossible should I decide to stay in Peru on a more permanent basis (and it looks more like I may do that) be able to keep a vehicle here that was originally imported to any other country- and 2) Driving around many South American countries with Colombian plates-- from what I am told-- may garner one undue harassment from local law enforcement. I do not know the validity of the second point however it bears consideration. A diesel 70 would be my preference--the only realistic way I would consider a 70 series due to petroleum prices here would be with a 5 spd manual gearbox and diesel. I did encounter one owner of a 70 series with the 3F engine who converted to LPG at one point but ended up converting back after engine problems with the top end. I have read in a number of places that type of conversion creates problems with that engine. Operation with LPG here only costs about 30% of what operation would using gasoline on the 3F. I am still on foot for now. Unfortunately here in Lima there arent any horses or mules.... that leaves skateboards and bicycles. Or a Suzuki. Also to give you an idea of how things work--- ran into a guy here who had a 60 who said his friend had one for sale and wanted $6000 for it. Circa 1978. Called him and went to look at the truck....rust starting on the bottom , tranny front seal leak but in its favor was all original. Asked him how much he was asking , he replied $8500. One price for the North American and one for someone from Peru. :)

If i couldn't get a landcruiser i think i would be looking at a Nissan Patrol , it may not be a Toyota but its still a seriously tough vehicle cabable of reaching very high mileage .

Thanks for the suggestion. Only have seen a couple of these here and there are only a few advertised as well.... a mid 2000 model diesel with around 100,000 KM brings $20,000 US. Not much different price wise from the Toyota. Thing to do is go to a different country I think......
