Hello 70's series Mudders! I've been living in the 60 series threads for a long time but dabble in the 40 and 100 series world too. I'm finally in the 70 series club!

I learned about LandCruiser Pickups like 30 years ago and instantly was my dream truck and had to have one. I got a buddy who's into the RHD drive stuff (HDJ81 and HJ73); he picked up a Century (if you know, you know) which is prolly the cooooolest thing I've driven and worked on. the V12 is amazing. any-hoo.....He was helping his family get a couple JDM Crowns and asked the importer, "hey, you got any 75 pickups coming in?" "yep!", he says. so I get a call, "hey, I'm gonna put a deposit on this for you, you can pay me back".
:)

a few months later, this rolls into the neighborhood:

1998 Middle East Spec FZJ75, 1FZ (carb), 5-speed (150f), HD suspension, LX trim package. It was obviously a work truck as they are in the middle east and not coveted like we covet them here. a decent respray, some bondo, but a solid, solid rig. I intend to use it as a pickup while I refurburate her. :-)

Although some of things I addressed that will be shared in the progress report may seem like head scratchers, the importer, who does visit this board was absolutely fantastic to work with. Great communication, accurate information, and vehicle condition disclosure was spot on. I have zero regrets, and maybe a few minor surprises, but all was to be expected.

I would definitely recommend @vansfromjapan

first things first - a general once over and baseline of fluids and minor/simple repairs.

After the basic fluid exchanges (diffs, oils, etc) it was on to the front end. wheel and knuckle bearings, TREs, Shocks and steering stabilizer.

Replaced the drive flanges with adjustable hubs. the neat thing about this 75 series is that it uses many of the same parts as my 60. I just grabbed some spares and went to town!

I started to poke about and fix other little things like the intrument bulbs and dash illumination, Cig lighter and replaced the interior light. easy stuff and good instant gratification.

more fun in progress pics....ok...not that fun, but pics.
the wiring was quite corroded and dropped into the bowels of the body. what I thought was a 15min. fix was not. :-)

I then looked at the cool snorkel. Awww yeah! I have one for my LX470 I need to install...but this has one! Or does it??

the Dorkel was just drilled into the fender with sheet metal screws.

the Heater valve was broken off and the hoses plugged on either end, I was hopeful it was just the valve, but my gut told me something's up with the heater core. so....onto the heater valve replacement and see what happens.

a very creative plug was discovered, as well as confirming my suspicions that there's a leak somewhere in the heater core - seals? tank itself? time will tell. just going to re-plug it for the summer and deal with it later. :-)

there are many things I want to get to - as I'm a bit of a perfectionist. but the good news is it's the neato cool stuff, not the essentials. it runs great, AC works, starts every time, it stops, hauls stuff and I love it.

Big thanks for the thread by @HeavyD basically the same stuff I'm doing, like almost exactly. but he's doing it more better.

now the slow search for the NLA or really hard to find stuff. I'll be posting in the classifieds or reaching out to the who's who in the 70's world. been searching for this stuff:
  • Spare tire giant bolt and other bracket that's NLA
  • sub-tank valve assembly to allow the tanks to breathe. I have cut and capped breather lines.
  • snorkel friendly airbox
  • rear license plate braket and light - maybe i just don't know the correct part? it's for the chrome bumper with the little cutout on the RH side.
Other items I'll make separate posts for eventually:
  • what's the best approach to get matching lock cylinders? DS and ignition are currently the same.
  • power locks: at least one actuator is missing and other stuff TBD
  • has power mirror switch, but no power mirrors. dang they are pricey
  • Tach no workie
  • main Fuel tank gauge is always "on", showing level....and empty light is always on. man, I don't wanna open up that can of worms!
