My 1997 80 series began to refuse to start on a few occasions a few months back. Would turn over and spark but would not start. Mechanic replaced fuel pump with Toyota pump back in March of this year which seemed to fix the problem. LC recently refused to start in the same manner again during a recent road trip which was again determined to be the fuel pump. Both mechanics expressed they have never seen this happen. What else could be going on here to cause this? Thank you in advance for any advice
Most likely it is not the fuel pump. Could be the fuel pump relay? This same situation came up on another 1997 80. Would start and run most of the time but out of nowhere it would only crank. In the end it turned out it was the TPS that was bad!

BTDT and currently doing it again. The problem is probably with the positive connection to the fuel tank. The wire carrying that is riveted through a plastic insulator and that gets corroded. I was able to gently rotate this from the underside of the tank hatch and apply acetic acid/vinegar to clean it up. And this worked for several months, but has recurred this weekend while out in the vacation road.
Pic Of my kludged repair is inserted above. Note that the tank lid assembly is currently unobtanium. Good luck
