1996 80 Series - Remove and replace rear backing plates/dust shields? (1 Viewer)

Hi - I'm in the middle of replacing the rear brake system from the spring assembly/load balancing back, including new lines, ebrake etc. Does anybody know how to get the rear backing plates off? I need to repair/replace mine because the area where the springs attach is rusted.

These backing plates are BIG BUCKS to replace with new, so I am thinking maybe braze on new metal where the right plate is rusted and then anti-rust her up. Anybody done that? Any help vastly appreciated!

Basically, pull the caliper, disc, axle shaft, and bearing hub and you should be able to unbolt the backing plate to remove. Use lots of penetrant on the bolts.

Great thanks - worked! Do you know if I need a special tool to get the oil seal out and replace it?
I'm having issues with the load proportioning system, too. I'm gonna start a new thread for that one because the replacement parts I have don't make sense.

I have a generic seal puller I use that you should be able to find at any auto parts store.

You can get a seal oullee at harbor freight for 8 bucks. It will save you alot of Hassel.

How did you remove the plate after the nuts are removed. Did you have to “persuade” them with a hammer??

I cut the proportioning lever off and just tied it up to the frame/body. Worked for me.
